Time to bring a twitter series to Bluesky: Given the incredible number of 20th-century churches in Northrhine-Westphalia (the topic of my dissertation), I’m going post one or two every day. None of these images are mine, they're all credited in the alt text, and I'll take any down if asked

Loving the third Google review of Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland
Three reviews of vineland:
(five stars): I really enjoyed this origami of a story. There are tender & sweet sections, steamy sections, and plain ol' weird sections. Every dog has his day, but, if you're a good dog, you just ...

one star: I gave up on this book about half way through.
While give Pynchon credit for a lot of imagination,it is a disjointed mess! I think author must have been on Hallucinogenics. It skips ...

five stars: Vangie always delivers excellent, fast, And friendly service! Vineland never disappoints for a nice glass of wine and a bite to eat!

#158: Karl Wilhelm Ochs, Church of the Good Shepherd, Gütersloh (1960-62)
A red-brick church phtograpged in bright fall light. The sanctuary building is to the left. Narrow wooden piers divide a window wall. To the right, a rectangular church tower has openings that start 2/3 of the way up. Photo via Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Gütersloh, https://www.ekgt.de/kirchen/zum-guten-hirten/. A sanctuary with two rows of wooden pews either side of a central aisle. Light enters through a wall of clear windows on the far side. The ceiling is slightly curved, and made up of a grid of steel beams. The altar is simple and slightly raised. Photo by Subbass1 via Wikimedia Commons. A view back from the laltar to the entrance. Similarly, a simple interior with whitewashed walls. Simple round black lights hang from the ceiling. Photo by Subbass1 via Wikimedia Commons. Perspective sketch of church and interior by Ochs. The entrance to a church. There is a large flat wall above the entrance, seemingly stucco, which has a line-drawing sgraffito of a person with windmilling arms. There is a short roof projecting in front of this wall, like a bicyclist's hat. Above the roof a cross is visible. There is a cobbled square in front of the church. The walls are stucco, the flat ceiling concrete. The altar is slightly raised. There are two floor-to-ceiling windows blocks either side of the altar. There is a mosaic of Christ with stigmata above the altar. Photo by PeOe via Wikimedia Commons Stained-glass windows composed of grids of squares, each of them made up of four squares. I’m a doctoral student at TXST.

The feeling on campus is worse than you imagine. Faculty afraid to speak, grad students feel like they could lose their entire futures if they draw the university president’s ire, undergrads openly worrying about the complete loss of a fundamental right.

I even have a lot of those, but haven’t found mentions yet… Thank you for these suggestions though!

That’s interesting! In this case I’m pretty sure it’s just the sheet/stamps themselves - as it’s a donation model (if you were being housed, you wouldn’t have to purchase stamps). The mechanism remains mysterious though

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!!

The University of Texas-Austin is beginning a process to eliminate the Black Studies, Latino Studies, and Gender Studies departments in the College of Liberal Arts. This is a grave threat to the educational liberty of students, faculty, staff, and the people of Texas. 1/

On this date, Matthew Shephard died 27 years ago. He was beaten, tortured, and left for dead on fence for being gay. Please keep him and his wonderful mother Judy in your thoughts. And let's all work for a world where such horrific things do not happen to anyone. ❤️🏳️‍🌈

Going through some Life and Look magazines from the mid-60s and this page from a “how the rich live” non-story story is just tremendous. The wealthy SHOULD be eating at the Four Seasons and giving joyrides to nuns instead of doing weird, dark social experiments with poors on their YouTube channel
Black-and-white magazine page with small photo of man and woman being waited on at restaurant and half-page photo of shirtless man driving a motorboat with several grinning nuns in habits and sunglasses, spraying lots of water. Caption “Above, Frank and Phyllis Jameson dine at the Four Seasons on a recent New York trip. He does not mind paying high prices, he says, provided what he gets is ‘just the very best.’ Below, Jameson, a Protestant, gives well-received respite to nuns who supervised 40 boys from Roman Catholic home on an all day outing aboard his schooner.”

Aerial view of a church. The church is built of concrete but has a very prominent aluminum-capped tower. The sanctuary has a roof with multiple different levels and clerestory windows between. The whole is in a green location near a field. Multiple ceiling planes are stacked above each other and seem to converge above the altar. Light enters through clerestory windows between the ceiling planes.
