Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Oh, we were. On April 3, they came and slashed our agency by nearly 70%. On June 10, our RIF was completed. It has been devastating.

The National Endowment for the Humanities did so much with such a small a slice of the pie, we were basically working from crumbs.

Yet that service was the very model of resilience - of our staff and our applicants and grantees. #NEH

Again, it is worth keeping in mind when comparing the rate of discoveries that public funding for medicine and the sciences is orders of magnitude larger than for the humanities. We work slow in part because we work on a shoestring.

We help fund new ways of archiving, & expanding digital technologies to understand & explore humanities.

One of the difficult things is that so many new grants have been awarded at the same time that so many were also awarded and then rescinded for absolutely no reason other than political. While it shouldn’t take away from the merits of the recipients, it stings those who were rescinded.
