There is no cat in this photo
Two green eyes of a black cat stare out of a bay window in a north London house. The cat is virtually invisible against the dark background of an unlit room

In a potential indicator of Russia's post-Putin foreign policy, intelligence services loyal to the balding man sitting on the right spent 8 years trying to kill the bearded man sitting on the left
I'm saving the second one for future use. Likely to come in handy, sooner rather than later
Love 'cult-de-sac'. Love this kind of thing. One of my favourite examples is 'well, we'll burn that bridge when we come to it', an enjoyably fatalistic mistaken phrase.
Great article. The Tories need their Kinnock if they are going to get out of the cult-de-sac* they've gone down.

*Auto correct but I kind of liked it.

There are four house martins feeding above my head. They’re six inches long and are about to travel 6,000 miles. That’s about 63 million times their body length. The lunatics.
Congratulations, excellent news!

One of the conspirators who helped Gavrilo Princip shoot Archduke Franz Ferdinand survived to see the breakup of Yugoslavia. He could conceivably have watched the Neighbours episode where Scott and Charlene got married

And here we go. I never wrote this article, and yet it is cited here.

And of course, it sounds so plausible, I seriously checked whether I had forgotten it, or the footnote was slightly wrong.

Henceforth the red robes will only be worn as an away kit when the Canadian Supreme Court is playing the US one.
Tragic news from Canada where the Canadian Supreme Court has gone from the official dress on the left to the one on the right
Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in bright red wooly gowns, with a beige trim. It looks sort of like a Santa robe The Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in black gowns with a bright white kravat, and two thin red vertical lines on the side of the robe
"Temporary" delivery, you say. Have you consulted the emperor and the tortie?
Lovely translation - and very interesting background about Rilke and Rodin

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

So sorry, Rachel. What happened was appalling and there is nothing to justify it
