This. And not simplistic at all.

I’m sure people will tell me I’m being simplistic, but imagine what £280k a year could do to support those kids’ families of origin, and maybe they wouldn’t have to go into care in the first place…

UK Gov probably be. "But we need to stay competitive and make profit."

It's a medical service, what sort of profits you looking for here? Just put someone in charge that knows what they're doing and stop employing someone that doesn't but has huge wage demands.

And let’s not forget the enormous wages of the CEOs and business managers in the NHS, social care, and in England, Multi Academy Trusts (MATs). Why should such institutions even need business managers? 🤯

‘Households across UK are paying a vast “privatisation premium” to access essential services. According to our estimates, the public have funded almost £200bn in dividends to the shareholders of the privatised water, energy and transport companies’

It seems pretty obvious to me, from evidence emerging from the Duke & Duchess of York (neither one the sharpest knife in the box) that Epstein was a manipulator & blackmailer; he’d get something ‘on’ an influential person & then pull the ropes. So why is the issue seldom discussed in this context?

This is interesting. The boomers finding a voice & a confidence that comes from hugely outnumbering other generations, contrasted with elders who survived 2 major wars, now facing the final war with mortality they won’t win. Have you got the whole paper? Here’s a visual blast from that past…

How do we feel about this? @oaknational.bsky.social receive £43m of public money and yet, wait for it, they are charging via MEI £135 per teacher for a course on how to use their materials: mei.org.uk/event/b935a0...

📌Imagine how different the optics would be if Joe Biden shut down the United States Government, fired workers, jeopardized healthcare, ordered troops into our streets, threatened NATO allies, and then escaped to Israel looking for people to kiss his ass.

He'd be endlessly pilloried by the press.

It’s so depressing. And it’s one of the issues driving people towards reform.

Now you see why the current “misconduct in public office” offence is a waste of time.
No one in public office is going to start prosecuting an Offence that promotes accountability from their peers

I despise the whole concept of the way you are treated in all kinds of circumstances, law-breaking, financial & employment opportunities etc being dependent on who you know. (Partly because I have never known anybody who could give me an advantage I suppose).
And yet we insist we are a meritocracy

Have the police turned up to interview this man under caution? No? Anyone spot a pattern emerging here?

It might actually be quicker to go through the list of senior ministers 2001-25 and tick off the ones that aren’t directly implicated in horrifying war crimes.

One of the things I find most upsetting about the current position of the US is that after studying its constitution, I was convinced it had retained the best of Britain, whilst removing the worse. Then 250 years later, we managed to eject 2 rogue PMs, while a rogue US president has come to this. 😭

But if evidence emerges that someone on the breadline has filled in a form wrong, they have to pay it back and they will be arrested if it looks like it may be intentional. This is outrageous. So arrest him, and interview him under caution.

…they also had to carefully consider how Trump was going to react if he didn’t get it. He can do a lot of harm to weaker nations (which is pretty much everyone else). He seems to be turning his sights inwards onto his own nation at the moment though, while all others play ‘don’t poke the bear.’

It is, but nations move slowly. The best analogy I can think of is Margaret Thatcher vs totalitarian. I think in that case a Maggie T democracy would be better than dictatorship. Depends if she wants to be a dictator or not if she got into the seat. It’s a compromise and I think a balance was struck

Are there any aspiring or developing fiction writers out there who’d like to have a look at/ join in conversation in my free to access ‘sandbox’ blog? I’ve published in the academic arena for nearly 25 years, but only started writing fiction in lockdown. Lots of fun - and frustration!
Writing fiction: Characters, Storylines and Believability
Someone asked me recently- how do I develop the characters and storylines in my novels? It was something I hadn’t systematically analysed, but on reflection, I realise that my process is highly rhi…
