And #Labour is copying not only the slogans, but also the visuals of Nigel Farage (thanks @yakopov.me for sharing UKIP logo)

While trying to play catch-up with Reform and its imaginary white working-class voters, #Labour is alienating millions of real British workers and voters.

There are over 10 million foreign-born residents in the UK (2021 Census).
And many more Britons have a parent who was born abroad.
In 2024, 40.4% of live births in Britain were to families with at least one parent born outside the UK — up from 35.1% in 2021.

Who is the #HomeOffice really targeting with this campaign?
While the stated goal in their latest #Immigration White Paper is to “cut net migration”, messages like this only make millions of UK residents (who are already here, sometimes for many years!) feel unwelcome.
nandosigona.bsky.social
To millions of foreign residents, that kind of message reads like: 'Stay in your place, head down, you are on borrowed time'

I deleted the first version because of a typo, given the emphasis on English proficiency, you never know the Home Office police what may be up to next.

'thanks' to the algorithm, this is what I woke up to every morning... As a foreigner, this really gets me in a good mood (not) for the day.

This morning instead they decided to name shame #Botswana and (re) introducing visa for everyone because a handful of people have dared to apply for asylum without risking their lives of a small boat crossing?
nandosigona.bsky.social
So to achieve a minor reduction in applications they are prepared to lose quite a bit of income from visa fees. So what exactly is the benefit? Ok a minor reduction, but why is this meant to be good/desirable?
nandosigona.bsky.social
UK universities opposed this fiercely - largely because they fear losing students and income. But the damage this measure does goes beyond it, it feeds the narrative that international students are just customers and migrants just workforce to exploit on demand, no string attached.

in theory, they are meant to be broadsheets targeted more or less to the same readership/demographics

A bit niche, I know, but I'm always amazed by how different the online cover pages of @theguardian.com and La Repubblica can be. The Italians must be obsessed with crime news (considering the number of murder stories covered per day).

Italy's largest union, with over 5.5 million workers, has called a general strike for Friday in solidarity with the Global Sumud Flotilla.

And smaller Italian unions have said they will join CGIL's general strike.

Exhausted by the avalanche of soundbites from #Labour dehumanising refugees and conflating asylum with ‘illegal migration’—a sign of a leadership that has lost any moral compass (assuming, generously, it ever had one).

'Graeme Atherton, head of the Ruskin Institute for Social Equity (Rise) at the University of West London, said the policy “is giving with one hand and taking with another” and will “exacerbate” the problems being faced by humanities and arts departments and disadvantaged students.'

Rather than building cohesion, such insecurity risks producing the opposite: disenfranchisement among those left in limbo, and heightened suspicion among the wider public, who are encouraged to believe that migrants must continually prove themselves.

Some may even be “barred from indefinite leave to remain entirely”. This would create a class of residents allowed to remain (tolerated) but never able to settle or feel secure.

Who loses out?
👉 Parents with caring duties
👉 People in insecure jobs
👉 Migrants already working long hours in essential roles
All face prolonged insecurity — bad for families, bad for cohesion.
