And his waving it off as "oh, those fibres weren't tough enough to make the cut" yeah, and the hole left by the fibres is still there, it's not skin, scar tissue doesn't grow into it!

Sometimes they point to cases where something is allowed in one jurisdiction and not another, but it's usually cases where there's a balance of actual/potential harms and benefits and different places make different calls (e.g. melatonin being over-the-counter medicine in Canada but not the UK).

I regularly use the Titan submersible case when explaining to my business-school students why regulations are a good idea and not, in fact, something that stifles innovation.

Well, it does stifle innovation, but only those innovations that might accidentally kill people if implemented.

"Titan submersible imploded due to poor engineering, say US officials."

Also experts, amateurs, people consigned to asylums for congenital lunacy, people who've never heard of submersibles before, a tortoise called Alan and literally anyone else hearing the vaguest description of it.
BBC headline - Titan submersible inked sure to poor engineering, say US officials - above an image of the submersible in happier times, eg when it hadn't yet imploded and turned its occupants into a seawater-flavoured paste.

<controversial opinion> good? The first movie was a fun novelty but that was about it, the second was dire.

Hm, very similar to the immigration discourse.

Kingdom. It's a Korean historical horror that's a bit like Game of Thrones without the gratuitous sex.

I find myself increasingly looking to the Financial Times for reality checks. This week: no, the benefits system isn't "broken" and welfare costs aren't "spiralling", nor is there an employment crisis: www.ft.com/content/ee67...
No need for a moral panic about the welfare system
It’s far from perfect, but the UK’s spending is broadly controlled and employment is high

In other news: Angry Robot Books has acquired Juliet E. McKenna’s The Riven Kingdom, described as a “fresh and gripping fantasy” that “blends politics, religion, and a battle for a dead king’s throne, perfect for fans of the Realm of the Elderlings series.”

It's sadly not surprising though. One problem with doing historical research on television is that it was, and still often is, seen as ephemeral and not worthy of serious consideration. There's a lot of material that survives only because of fans and collectors, not actual academics and archivists.

Yes. They tried that before, and it had a definite impact on one of my Doctor Who books: there were some pieces of original material that I know existed once, because Andrew Pixley refers to them in his articles-- but I have to take it on faith that he was reporting it right.

I write academic and popular works of television criticism. The Written Archive has been an invaluable source for my research on Doctor Who and Blake's 7. I had plans for a work on the groundbreaking multiethnic 1970s series Gangsters, which it will be much harder to do without the Archives.
drfionamoore.bsky.social
And again, this is a travesty of what an archive should be for.

For reasons, it would be v. helpful to have information from a broad range of academic and non-academic (incl. GLAM) users of the BBC Written Archives OTHER THAN historians, briefly on: 1) What you've used it for and 2) How the proposed changes would impact on your research.

People are always rightly pointing out that Warhammer contributes more to the British economy than the fishing industry, but the problem is that there just aren't very many folk songs about Warhammer

I liked the BSG remake, and Caprica was a series that deserved a longer run: a sort of The-Godfather-Meets-Mark-Zuckerberg story of the origin of the Cylons. Uneven but nothing that an extra season wouldn't have fixed.
drfionamoore.bsky.social
My reference point is always the original, but I heard somewhere that post-millenial readers assume he was talking about a blue sky and I've never forgotten that.
drfionamoore.bsky.social
It's outside of your sample (being American and also something of a television footnote these days), but just out of interest, the Battlestar Galactica spinoff series Caprica was shot using the multi-camera method.
drfionamoore.bsky.social
I think it's funny that "the sky was the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel" still works-- but it's shifted in meaning from dull grey to sunny blue.
drfionamoore.bsky.social
The Stewart Lee op-ed about the flag-posters was genuinely funny.
