regular readers will be pleased to hear I've taken up Waking the Dead. It's no Silent Witness (yet) but I'm enjoying this episode's early 00s "police are befuddled by computer" bits. "he just thinks I'm some old biddy surfing the net in the afternoon!" omg they just saw a stabbing live on webcam!!

I think people might misunderstand what "an A-level ... standard" are in this context.

It's the level of English you would need to be able to study any subject at A level - so no expectation that you've got a good grasp of the works of Shakespeare.

English language requirement for the Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual and Scale-up routes is increased from B1 Level to B2 Level (as defined under the Common European Framework for Reference for Languages (CEFR)).
