WeGo said there’s stigma associated with showing a bus driver a SNAP card yet their IG story right now is them filming a line of SNAP recipients waiting for a Journey Pass at WeGo Central. Absolutely disgusting & indicative of how much they value positive PR over the dignity of our neighbors 🤬🤬🤬

On Tuesday, Council passed a resolution supporting the Mayor’s Office & partners in their SNAP response. An amendment requested Mayor’s Office work with WeGo to suspend fares. Amendment adopted & resolution passed unanimously with 33-0-0 vote. The Mayor returned the unanimous resolution unsigned.

Council just UNANIMOUSLY requested the Mayor’s Office work with WeGo to immediately suspend fares until WeGo’s next board meeting on November 20th or upon the resumed disbursement of SNAP benefits, whichever comes first.

-WeGo staffer said later dates will be for folks who are low-income & they are not checking income verifications today. Today = for MAC customers, snap recipients, folks who are homeless

In response to the lapse in SNAP benefits, WeGo scheduled more events for recipients to sign up for the Journey Pass. But the amount of people in need of free bus fare was overwhelming.

I respect my drivers. I respect WeGo.
I say "Hello" when I get on and "Stay safe" when I get off.
I do not need any sort of relationship beyond that.
But my respect would grow exponentially if WeGo went fare-free for all.

I'm not a proponent of Free Fare Transit.
Right now is different. This is about people getting food in their stomachs.

I am a proponent of fare free transit because the fare really is the taxes we all pay.
And WeGo should be fare free permanently because SNAP disruptions underscore the issues of affordability and hard financial decisions but they will not end when SNAP is back online.
BUT it is a good start.

Household budgets are already strained and they're about to get *much* tighter as the federal government fails to fund family nutrition.
Suspending fares until this gets resolved would provide relief and I hope WeGo will do it.

A growing coalition is calling on WeGo to freeze fares during the lapse in SNAP benefits. Riders shouldn’t have to choose between going to the food bank and going to a Metro agency to get a bus pass. Let’s make transit a lifeline, not a burden.

If you can make it to Rush Hospital in Aurora, IL, an ICE patroller got pulled out of her car, assaulted and pepper sprayed by agents. She's in the hospital and nobody except ICE is allowed to see her.

MAC/WEGO bus pass update! Due to minimal info, I went to MAC for us! If you haven’t been before, here’s a little video. There’s no signage. Once inside, you fill out a short form, get a #, wait in line. I asked about income limits, they said there are none. If you come today, you get a bus pass.
