European civil groups call for ditching U.S. fossil fuels imports, likening Trump to Putin.

Following Trump's strikes on Venezuela and his escalating threats to other Latin American countries and Greenland, over 120 European and international civil society groups sent a letter to EU leaders to urge them to cancel negotiation and implementation of the US-EU trade deal and reduce reliance on US fossil fuels in solidarity with those threatened by Trump's fossil-fueled imperialism. Signatories include Oil Change International, Centre for International Environmental Law, Greenpeace International, Urgewald, Friends of the Earth Europe and US, Conexiones Climáticas, European Trade Justice Coalition, and networks such as Pax Christi International and the EU-Lat network. The letter argues that every Euro spent on US fossil fuels, and every fossil fuel investment made by European companies and banks in the United States, fuels Trump's authoritarian agenda at home and his imperial ambitions abroad. Emphasizing that Europe prides itself on being a leader in upholding international law and democracy, and defending human rights and climate action the letter stresses that EU leaders must now take a strong stand against Trump - just as they did towards Putin. The signatories also highlight that Trump is using the threat of economically devastating tariffs to ensure the EU would agree to import $750 billion of US energy products over the next three years - a deal many analysts say would risk creating yet another dangerous dependency for Europe while also leading to the weakening or abandoning of crucial climate and human rights legislation in the EU. Increased reliance on expensive, highly polluting US fossil fuels will also worsen the climate crisis, and is expected to raise energy prices for EU households, up to one in four of whom are already unable to afford to adequately heat, cool, or light their homes.

Yesterday, Urgewald released the MetCoal Exit List (MCEL) 2.0, a follow-up to last year’s edition.

The update identifies 145 companies with 273 expansion projects planned in 20 different countries, which could potentially add up to 580 million tonnes of new #MetCoal.

While the Yamal LNG project does not account for all of Russia's LNG exports to Europe, the terminal, located in Russia's far north Yamal Peninsula, serves as Russia's key export hub to Europe. Of the 19.7 million tons of LNG exports from Yamal, over 15 million tons — or 76.1% - are shipped to European ports. In 2025, France served as the largest importer of Russian LNG from Yamal LNG, accounting for nearly 42% — or 6.3 million tons — of all imports, according to Urgewald. While another 4.2 million tons of LNG delivered to Belgium's Zeebrugge terminal.

And it is obvious but worth repeating: as Sebastian Rötters, an the energy and sanctions campaigner at #Urgewald, points out the EU does have viable alternatives to #LNG from Russia, but true independence will only come by weening ourselves off gas.

It's not just that #EU ports are welcoming cargos of liquified natural gas from #Russia, it is that western firms are supplying the infrastructure to keep the whole business going.
