In the history of British comics it can be hard to grasp that the avant-garde Revolver and the digest-sized Starblazer existed at the same time... In fact, they both came to an end thirty-five years ago next month!

Not sure how y’all celebrate birthdays but I’m choosing violence. Malört, 22 year old hazmat Willett, Roasted Red Pepper & White Bean Soup and a loud ass Buzzzard show at the Ol’ Pizza King. Today is gonna be a great entrance into officially being old. This is 50 and there will be a Starblazer.

A few more Alcatena-drawn panels from STARBLAZER. Breathtaking stuff.

A lot of Starblazer feels like diet 2000AD (in the same way Commando felt like vegetarian BATTLE) but the Alcatena-drawn issues are another level altogether...

Starhawk got about a bit, from Crunch to Hotspur (via merger), and then Starblazer, Victor, Spike and Buddy (as ‘Young Starhawk’)

STARBLAZER was DCT's response to Star Wars/2000AD, but in retrospect there is a notable gap for an SF weekly anthology there - perhaps one built around CRUNCH's space hero Starhawk

His ship looked remarkably like the Millennium Falcon too. Though he was a much straighter hero - James Bond in space

Found on a harddrive - the brilliant and bizarre STARBLAZER art of Enrique Alcatena

IIRC, Starblazer WAS Commando but wearing a spacesuit instead of battledress.

Ah! Probably the kind of thing I would expect, unfortunately! I understand that the guidelines for Commando are also super rigid. I mean, we should be grateful things like Commando are still running, but a modern-day Starblazer could be fun...

C 1981, Starblazer put an ad in the Guardian soliciting for writers. I pitched a few ideas to them - had some back and forth with the editor on one, but they didn't buy anything from me. My memory is that their guidelines were so rigid they'd only take rehashes of what they'd already done.

Starblazer was one of my entry drugs to science fiction. I used to get them in the holidays in particular. A nice alternative to 2000ad and Starlord. You can get them off eBay. They aren't always that cheap. On the whole the artwork is better than the stories.

Tangential to this article but I've never heard of Starblazer - and it looks legit amazing? I wonder how hard the issues are to track down on eBay...

I mean, it's Fate. About the only thing it has in common with Fudge is the dice and the ladder. It also wasn't always as elegant...Fate in the Dresden Files era, particularly third party games like Starblazer Adventures or Stands of Fate, were pretty clunky. But Fate Core's reworking of aspects,
