Never understood the differences from a tax perspective between a farm & an SME. It seems that most SME’s are incorporated as Ltd. Co’s with Co Directors etc & an element of succession planning, why doesn’t this happen with Farms, which in all aspects are just SME’s?

This shift moves you from being a servant to your business to making the business serve you. It provides an immediate psychological win; seeing your own pay account grow, even by a small amount, reminds you why you started this journey in the first place.

See this on the business side all the time. The best analysts are great number crunchers, but have the humility to engage SME‘s to make sure they’re not missing something.

Bad ones race to announce their brilliant analysis that misses some crucial peace of context

And why are UK SME's more at risk?

Higher level of pandemic-related debt.

Number of SME's
United Kingdom 5.5 - 5.7 million
Germany 3.2 - 3.4 m
France 3.5 - 3.6 m

Greece, Ireland, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, have seen the most increase in insolvency in the last year.

SME's are struggling throughout Europe - but you'd know this if you researched thoroughly. They blame high energy costs, skills shortages, intense competition, complex regulations, and financing gaps, AND Brexit. So, the EU has negotiated a deal hurting businesses within it.

The NCSC CHECK Gold Standard: A UK SME’s Ultimate Weapon for Unbeatable Cybersecurity + Video
Introduction: The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) CHECK scheme represents the pinnacle of assured penetration testing, primarily for government and critical national infrastructure. For Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), while a formal CHECK test is not mandatory, its rigorous framework provides an unparalleled benchmark for evaluating security providers, enhancing report quality, and meeting escalating regulatory and supply chain demands. In an environment where 32% of UK businesses face cyber breaches annually—a figure that jumps to 59% for medium-sized firms—leveraging this "gold standard" is a strategic imperative for survival and growth.

I raised this red flag in 2010.

Confronting Andrew Leach with said realities resulted in Andrew blocking me on Twitter.

Now Andrew is raising the red flag.

When economists’ ideas conflict with professional analysis of STEM SME’s it’s because they are scientifically illiterate.

“The way the (Mine Financial Security Program) is set up means that the government will come asking companies for a security deposit well into the future, (said U of A prof. Andrew Leach), ‘when they get much closer to bankruptcy.

‘That should raise red flags.’”

The nice thing about EU citizenship (vicarious, not reality): My Coke SME’s wife is Spanish, so they are going there for work visa stuff, not Paris, as I expected. Can’t lose.

Counterintuitively I think it will be primarily SME's that felt compelled to integrate generative AI into their systems (particularly booking systems), that will be most adversely affected (not that said AI is doing a great job now).

Yes, but that's not entirely dissimilar to the wider world, where SME's with no clear career development path will eventually be promoted into management positions they don't really want. OBV there's a class of pro managers who float about trying to get promoted and learning nowt about the biz

I'd suspect there will be more of this going on all over the country, why else is business turning against Brexit all of a sudden? It might be because they know they actually need migrant workers, they just don't like fair wages, paradoxically, some SME's support Reform too, which is puzzling.

A few employers/SME's have been walloped with the same thing, its almost like we have a pattern here. A bit like some of them have been taking advantage of vulnerable people and exploiting them because they have no rights.

Oh wise sage, thank you for sharing what you “DO” know! Are these the same SME’s who forced the govt climbdown on workers rights in the 1st year? Or the ones who have sacked most of their admin staff to replace them with AI? Maybe it’s the ones who’s workers are all “self-employed” or part time?

“Innovation wins wars when burocratic friction is minimised “. A crucial role is played by the innovative capacity of SME’s and their need for decentralised access to funding. Part of the puzzle for strategic resilience:

For my own part, I've felt a squeeze on content work, though the one time I was instructed to use an AI content generator to write an article, the AI was fed source material that had already taken SME's a week to write and spat out something that needed another week to fix and re-approve.

Not even trying to catastrophize or anything, but it's so bleak to see SME's and industry veterans just being tossed aside, and then it's like, even if I WERE to get my foot in the door, who then are my peers? I want to learn FROM the people who are masters at their craft, but they keep getting axed
