Roddenberry making Skants a thing on TNG in 87 was both contemporary (cuz gender was a gloriously weird thing in 80s pop culture) & extremely forward thinking & I say fuck it, every school gets a trouser uniform & a skant uniform & the students mandatorily all have to wear them on alternating weeks.

You can say a lot of things about Gene Roddenberry, but if you think he'd be against diverse casts and queer characters, you never actually paid attention. He was the one putting men in skants and having queer couples in the background of scenes on TNG until he was told to stop.
@startrek turns 60 this year and I am proud to have been part of it for more half of its lifetime. Many pontificate over what Star Trek is and should be and which new iterations of Star Trek the late Gene Roddenberry would "like" and which would make him "turn over in his grave".

Every time you see these weird AI models in ads it's never anything like Homer Simpson or Professor Xavier. It's always some kawaii teen in her skants and that tells you everything about who it's being marketed to and that it's not a broad market that should be getting billions thrown at it.

I know you're right, but my headcanon says otherwise! Maybe you can be slightly more free to accessorize for court marshals on hot planets / when you want to be hot for a court marshal on a planet?! (tbh the Lower Decks one I just skipped as given, it'd be offensive if they DIDN'T bring skants back)
