There’s always plenty of fish in the sea, but not in the Rakaia River. Rakaia’s salmon fishing competition is dead in the water and it’s all because of dirty dairy. The intensive dairy industry has sucked Canterbury’s rivers dry with irrigation to grow enough grass for the oversized dairy herd.

A once abundant native fish is on the verge of extinction. It is seemingly linked to the rapid collapse of the Rakaia river ecosystem www.thepress.co.nz/nz-news/3609...
What happened to all the fish?
For the first time in more than 40 years, this year’s Rakaia fishing competition will not involve fishing. What has gone wrong?

"The Rakaia fishing competition has been held for more than 40 years. Later this month, it will return. There will be prizes and a crowd. But for the first time in its history, the fishing competition will involve no fishing.

Aotearoa New Zealand is home to a remarkable number of endemic taxa, some of which have existed on the archipelago since before the breakup of Gondwana. The mite harvesters (suborder Cyphophthalmi), tiny non-spider arachnids that dwell in forest leaf litter and caves, are one such group. The mite harvester family Pettalidae Shear exhibits a classic Gondwanan distribution with notable diversity in Aotearoa, which is home to three pettalid genera.
