#plasticstreaty
Sharing scientists' experience at #PlasticsTreaty negotiations, Patricia Villarubia-Gómez of SLU Umea underscores: at the treaty's core is the role of robust scientific evidence, calling for need for robust conflicts-of-interest policy & processes to ensure independence.

Europe’s supermarket shelves packed with ‘misleading’ claims about recycled plastic packaging, while the #EU continues to subsidize it. It is time to #CutPlasticProduction and develop #Reuse at scale! #PlasticsTreaty

Bottomline:
🌀#PFAS pollution can be stopped— if accountability is at the core
🌀Paying after the damage is done is not enough
🌀 The #PollutersPaysPrinciple should be key across fora, incl. The ongoing #PlasticsTreaty talks.

The #PlasticsTreaty is a powerful opportunity to #BeatPollution right now, with a majority of states calling for measures to reduce production and regulate chemicals of concern. #BreakFreeFromPlastic
Chemicals are part of modern life. But when they aren’t managed well, they contribute to pollution that harms ecosystems and causes ≈9 million deaths a year.

Science shows it's possible to #BeatPollution: smarter design → safer use → sound management → healthier people and planet.

You cannot clean up a flood without turning off the tap.

Governments must deliver a strong Global #PlasticsTreaty that cuts plastic production at the source and makes polluters pay.

Every delay means more plastic in our lungs, food and water.

I don't think the general public is clueless about this, there are studies showing broad support in many different countries on lowering, e.g. this poll by @greenpeace.org. This is one of the reasons why UN member states are negotiating a global #PlasticsTreaty.

We are breathing the fallout of an out-of-control industry. Whether a tissue sample measures 0.5% or 0.05%, this toxic dust should not be in our bodies. Shaping public discourse around the nuances of clinical study only serves to disrupt the urgent need for a #PlasticsTreaty @unep.org

Agreeing a #PlasticsTreaty to truly #BeatPlasticPollution depends on dialogue, transparency and trust.

But the science is clear: we don’t have unlimited time. As I said at #UNEA7, a historic plastics treaty is still within reach if we continue inclusive work together:
