When I was in high school, I studied a page of Talmud (Baba Metzia) that dealt with the person who accepts the responsibility of taking care of someone else's property without getting paid for it. That's one of the topics in this parsha, and I remembered the way the text worked, forever. #ParshaChat

We read the 10 Commandments in the parsha last week that reminded us to consider "the stranger" when we keep Shabbos & we say it in kiddish!

So, yes we should daven, have nice meals, sing, read, rest, but to keep Shabbos we MUST think morally about those who are the most vulnerable in our society!

3/ Later in the parsha, we have the famous נעשה ונשמע (We will do and we will hear). Continuing our story, they’re saying “ok ok ok, I’ll do it and I’ll figure out the details later”. Kinda like accepting the license agreement on software, I just want it to work.

1/ Chevre, this week’s parsha is Mishpatim (משפטים). Last week we recieved the Torah at Sinai. This week we do a deep dive into the details of the laws. Civil Laws, Slavery, Murder, Murder of a Slave, Injury, Death by Animal, Danger of a Pit, Damages, etc etc. Lots and lots of details.

If I understood correctly, only the Kedoshim parsha in the Svihov scroll, held by Congregation Albert in ABQ, has been repaired. But this makes me feel better

2/ And the parsha ends with the giving of the 10 commandments.

But after the advice and before the 10 commandments, there is a listing of the qualifications for leadreship. Who should Moshe put in place between himself and the people.

1/ Chevre, this week’s parsha is Yitro (יתרו). There are some major things that happen in this week’s parsha. Yitro comes, this is Moshe’s father-in-law. And he sees Moshe sitting all day giving judgements to the people. And he tells Moshe that he can’t continue like this. It doesn’t scale.

Musings of a prog rock nerd while reading Parsha Yitro (while 🤒):

-why have I not been calling one of my favorite bands Yitro Tull all these years?

-Gershon Eliezer Weinrib sang a line "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend". While I get Neil's particular point, Geddy, I'm sad.

8/ So while we at awed and inspired by the bravery, heroism and awesomeness of what has happened over the past 2 years, we need to learn from the parsha that we need to maintain our achdut (our cohesiveness).

7/ Yellow pins, ribbons, posters, chairs and all the other constant reminders are being removed. We feel we can start to breath again.

Take note, however, that at the end of the parsha, Amalek attacks. They attack after the people start to complain about food and water.

6/ This week, the IDF returned the final hostage from Gaza and for the first time in 14 years! there are no Israeli hostages being held in Gaza. I’m not the first or the last to make the connection with the parsha, where the people sing out of joy.

1/ Chevre, this week’s parsha is BeShalach (בשלח). This is also called Shabbat Shirah because of the song in the middle of the parsha. Paro changes his mind, again, about letting the Israelites go and sends his army after them. The people are between the sea and the oncoming army and start to panic.

Thinking about commentary in Etz Hayim Chumash on today's parsha - why did first-born of the non-Israelite Egyptian slaves die when they had no power to influence the Egyptian elite/Pharaoh?

Because they didn't make common cause with the Israelites for their mutual freedom.

Solidarity.

Parsha Post : Bo
Do you have any idea how hard it is to illustrate the 10 plagues for kids?
like this one that i made for a book set in a flamingo world. It will make sense trust me!

I’m not sure if that’s the best educational approach. WDYT? What’s the best way to teach about PLAGUES?

1/ Chevre, this week’s parsha is Bo (בא). This week’s parsha starts off with the final 3 plagues. Locusts, Darkness and death of the firstborn.

The plague of Locusts is that they come and eat everything. In the cloud world we would call this a customer or user.

As we read in this week’s parsha (Torah portion):
תּוֹרָה אַחַת יִהְיֶה לָאֶזְרָח וְלַגֵּר הַגָּר בְּתוֹכְכֶם׃
There shall be one law - for the citizen and for the stranger/foreigner who dwells among you.

With a wounded but open heart: see you soon Minneapolis 💞

This week’s parsha: I buy into how it’s one giant frog. Someone poked it with a stick and it exploded into millions of tiny frogs. The sages were deep into fannon and I’m here for it.

I know this will mean nothing to 99.9% of people here, but after nearly a decade of reading a portion of the Torah in synagogue about 4 times a year, I finally read a parsha today without a single hesitation or mistake despite my sucky Hebrew. So I'm feeling quite proud of myself.
