They are definitely worth it! Especially given that the molds are copies of the original Maquettes used for the show.

Prices do seem to fluctuate but I've been noticing them going for a bit cheaper lately, most I paid for one was around £30 for the Ophthalmosaurus

Today a child wanted to know what an ophthalmosaurus looked like, because ancient reptiles are cool to kids.

A physical book showed a great illustration and photos of their fossils
AI slop/machine regurgitation showed a dolphin combined with a manatee and misspelled ophthalmosaurus

Also, how close is close enough - what is the 'resolution' you are analysing convergence?
True, fish & ichthyosaurs are wildly convergent. But tuna and Ophthalmosaurus are much more alike than either is to carp or Cymbospondylus.

These differences really matter - at a certain scale.

With my #ESEB2025 tour concluded and myself on the way back, I’m arranging photos taken in #Barcelona. First of all, the Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona, which is sweetly located near the conference venue.
The museum from the outside. Skeleton of a fin whale near the entrance. The whale beached in 1862 and was kept in Catalonia because of local people’s wish. Some animal specimens in the museum. This set has a theme of “predators”, with animals included here all have some unique/interesting means of hunting. Fossilized skull of a Ophthalmosaurus incenicus. It’s one of the best known ichthyosaurs thanks to it appearance in the documentary series Walking with Dinosaurs.

A medium sized ichthyosaur from the middle Jurassic. It had small needle-like teeth and enormous eyes that helped it catch quick prey in low light conditions. A body plan that converges on the look of dolphins often gets this animal confused as one.

an Ophthalmosaurus swims by the surface of the ocean without disturbing the surface, the ocean is dark underneath it and the water is fairly calm Ophthalmosaurus is a genus of ichthyosaur, an extinct group of marine reptiles that looked like reptilian dolphins with four limbs, that swam from side to side rather than up and down a Spriggina crawls along the muddy sediment of the Ediacara Hills, the shadows of petalonamids fall around it Spriggina is an ancient organism who's exact taxonomic affinity is still unknown, it was segmented but without a hard exoskeleton. petalonamids were another group of ancient organisms who were leaf shaped and probably filtered organic particles from the water column a Bothriolepis kicks up sediment in a shallow freshwater waterbody looking for food. the water is stained orange with tannins, blurry greenery can be seen through the surface of the water Bothriolepis is a small armoured fish that looked and fed somewhat like a pleco, being very heavily armoured and box shaped a Homunculus lays down in dappled light in a forest, its laying on its left side and holding both its feet with its left hand. its right hand is scratching its right thigh, and it has massive bright blue testicles being illuminated by a spot of light, it's side-eyeing the camera and sticking its tongue out Homunculus is a genus of extinct new world monkey who's relation to other new world monkeys is still unknown.
