YouTube's been real slow lately on the encoding side. Tried to yank some music out of a video after posting it and the processing spun for like four days. Now today's archive says it's going to take hours to get up.

I'm randomly thinking about algorithmically-generated music again. You can do it using math and by encoding principles of musical structure.

Gen AI doesn't work like that; it recombines existing patterns but it doesn't "understand" them.

Nothing I love more than getting FLAC releases of all sorts of music then encoding them all to lossy 160kbps Opus VBR for my phone. The files are way smaller yet the quality is near indistinguishable, miles better than MP3 at the same bitrate and a bit better than AAC too

Indeed! Even just the encoding. Some music is most pristine recorded to cassette off late-night radio. Some things are actually better as 128kbps MP3. (Doit / Mouse on Mars / youtu.be/agVlA3nNNEI)

subtlest imo: Some Monk recordings absolutely need really good hi-fi gear. youtu.be/i61gSKmeQ74

To be honest it was also just really neat that they got something that tiny to work. I thought it was a fun little gadget.

As a windows user trying to use itunes to load music was a nightmare though. I think it could be bypassed if you learned how to get mp3 files with the right encoding.

"While listening to music, fluctuations between different emotional valences bias temporal encoding process toward memory integration or separation."

Emotion and memory entwined - or is it rather *music* and memory?

After two weeks of programming, my sequenced music finally works on PS1.

Previously, I could only play existing PS1 tracks from other games from .SEQ/.VAB/ADPCM files.

Making my own tracker format + properly encoding samples was incredibly complex, but I did it!

Bluesky isn't the best with music embeds, there's a lot of file size and duration restrictions, and it would have to be a video under a minute. I could do a YouTube link, but I've been having trouble with video encoding recently getting a video that looks as good as it sounds and uploads quickly.

At the weekend, I was working on the first track of the next album, which involves encoding lyrics into the music itself rather than singing them. This one turned out sounding a little bit "Boards of Canada", which was not intentional but quite welcome.

Cleanly mixed and mastered modern music is the hardest to detect for me
