I've been gaining interest in developing test ROMs for the MMC5 mapper chip. I've experimented recently with seeing how certain emulators handle PRG-RAM from $8000-$DFFF.

Long shot, but did anyone by chance download Japanese game hacker makimuraMFG's VRC7 Family BASIC or MMC5 Family BASIC hacks in the past 11 or so years they've been online? His website is down and they weren't crawled by Archive.

Just converted Doki Doki Panic from an FDS image to a NES ROM. This works by using the MMC5 mapper's ability to map PRG-RAM from $6000-$DFFF. Saving works too which is incredibly awesome!

I've attached a video of the ROM working on the NES core for MiSTer.

I honestly thought about doing a Castlevania Trilogy cart ala Infidelity's Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. but Castlevania III is MMC5 and that's too scary.

During development, it was decided that the content was too large to fit on the MMC3 board, so it was developed as a multiple-disc system.

However, with the advent of the MMC5 board, which can hold up to 4+4 megaroms, the product was released on a limited basis on this board.

It is *IMPOSSIBLE* to use the MMC5 1024 bytes of additional RAM for entropy compression. It also couldn't be used to decompress graphics or data in real-time.

godzilla.NES was a trip tho.

has anyone attempted to hack the compile godzilla that its based on into that, and maybe convert it's original mapper to something like MMC5 to do half of the crazy stuff.

MMC5 was used in only 4 games, at least the best configuration of the mapper chipset.

All of the 4 games are strategy games, and they're not very fun or even look very impressive.

So, why did these games need the most advanced, expensive chipset?

Famicom MMC5 Boogie
Bandit Kings of Ancient China is one of my favorite games. It’s a strategy game, which makes it a bit of a weird fit for the NES. Originally released for the PC-88 and later ported to several other platforms, the fact that Koei brought it to the NES is one of the reasons I appreciate it so much. I’ve always been a fan of ambitious ports.
