I wrote ER fanfic in middle school and went to a book event when her memoir came out and had her sign my belly when I was very pregnant with my second 😭.
A few months ago, I rolled up my sleeves, gathered some courage, and submitted my first piece in years to nonfiction literary journals. Then last week, I got the nicest, most encouraging rejection from one of the biggest journals around.
Lesson: some rejections are still wins.

Thinking about this today: the part in André Dewavrin's memoir of organizing the French Resistance where he shows up in Lille and meets with the on-the-ground organizers. They look to him for leadership and he is overcome by the awe and horror of knowing that he is there to ask, not to give.
The part that made me cry was Dewavrin’s memory of sitting at this table, looking at these people who were “full of faith and quiet courage,” all looking at him tell them the plan.
And he didn’t know how to tell them that de Gaulle was looking to *them* not the other way around.

The entire RW book industry is basically this model. Some random PAC buys up thousands of the latest grifter’s memoir or criticism of “woke” or whatever, then it shoots up the NYT Best Seller list. Then the random PAC gives them away to donors or often just lets them rot in a storage space somewhere

I want to tell you all how I spent my years from 15 to 23, but that’s my memoir I’m still laboring over. But it was kinda best-of-times-worst-of-times stuff and I am appalled at this. 23-year-olds should not be capitulating like this. He’s not an actual human at this point.

Sadly, the museum wasn’t yet open the year we visited with my free ticket from the book. I wandered the city despondent, drowning my sorrows in Efes and pomegranate juice, dipping into Pamuk’s city memoir. Hope to return this year—me, for the museum; my wife, for the Adana kebab. (OK, OK, me too.)
