A star's color reveals its temperature: blue stars are the hottest, and red stars are the coolest. Our Sun is in the middle but will eventually become a Red Giant, billions of years from now.

Life Hack: Timing shots for planetary alignments or eclipses sharpens long-term planning skills. Luckily, there are web sites that can help with that. See http://astropotamus.com/articles/web-sites for more information.

Astrometry measures the positions and movements of stars and other celestial objects. Without it, we wouldn't be able to plan missions to orbit, the Moon, or other planets in the solar system.

Life Hack: Successfully capturing celestial phenomena provides a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem. Especially after the dozen or so failed attempts because of clouds, rain, poor guiding, forgot to turn the gear on, etc etc etc.

Use the '500 Rule' to calculate your exposure time and avoid star trails in your photos. 500 / Crop-Factor / Focal Length = ideal shutter speed in seconds. So for a 1.6x APS-C camera with a 100mm lens, it would be 500 / 1.6 / 100 = 3.125 seconds.

The universe is expanding, and galaxies are moving away from us at incredible speeds. At some point, they will be so far away, moving so quickly, that we will not be able to see them because light won't have time to reach our eyes.

Binary stars can be studied using astrometry to determine their orbits and masses. When two stars collide, crazy things can happen like supernova explosions, pulsars, neutron stars, and even black holes!

NASA's OSIRIS-APEX just flew past Earth, making a course adjustment to asteroid Apophis in 2029. Apophis will come very close to us that year & could hit in the future.

OSIRIS-APEX will tell us a lot about Apophis...assuming the mission survives budget cuts. 🔭🧪
