also because their infosec people installed too many random security apps on their machines that a few apps we needed for kubernetes dev work never installed and worked correctly

kubernetes is like, a full on infra tool

docker composer is a dev tool

both have use cases but if you're not using k8s in prod you probably shouldn't use it locally
