#gcp
I heard someone describe Azure as “the Boomer cloud”

Crude but also accurate

Cannot recall any startup that is not on AWS or GCP

I provide accessibility to #discord users via text to speech. I would have to spend $1,200 on my #aws or #gcp bill if I wasn't using my own backend (71,430,422 chars/m)

it can't even cover my current costs, let alone gain profit

Google discloses their power consumption, and it was 30.8 terawatt-hours per year in 2024 - which works out to 3.516 gigawatts across 37 data centers

That includes Google search, Gmail, YouTube, their entire AI operation, AND GCP which powers thousands of other companies
Here's the thing: nobody has built a gigawatt data center. They do not exist. Nobody has an open date on a 1GW data center. Even Elon Musk cannot afford to just *build* a 1GW data center and needs a weird SPV with NVIDIA. Nobody has the power for a 1GW data center. it's all bullshit!

Just built a skill for Claude to estimate Pub/Sub cost in GCP - it contains the actual pricing data and a python script to do accurate calculations. This is pretty cool stuff!

And Google cloud doesn’t have any settable hard spending limits basically, afaik. I was learning GCP on the free tier and wandered into the reddit for it and every post on the reddit was basically “oops I owe Google $8000”. … almost as if it’s by design

New region alert! 🌍

You can now create Postgres and Vitess databases in the europe-west1 region in GCP (Belgium).

Iirc aws and gcp were basically just attempts to monetize excess resources initially iirc.

From a network perspective the hyperscalers also don't have a bunch of the costs that smaller providers would have. They are their own transit providers.
I think Google is furthest along with b4/orion/jupiter

This is also doable with other S3-compatible free-tiers like for GCP or AWS. Doesn't have to be Cloudflare but it was the easiest for me to set up and the closest geographically to my PDS.

My largest concern is that the physical infrastructure that any service built around AT Protocol is also at risk. Not a lot of options that scale well outside of AWS, Azure, GCP, and Alibaba CCS.

But it's good to see open protocols be built and services around them maintained.

Interesting thing I'm learning about Google, while doing my deepdive on them:

Feels like there is no other company where there is *so much* aversion to build on the company's own cloud solution (GCP) as there is at Google.

Most greenfield projects still don't choose GCP...

Jokes aside, I get the nuance, but it still reads as "GCP is good enough for you, but not for us lol", which is not a great message.

Also, you shouldn't design something for dogfooding, you should dogfoodit to (better) design it. That's why it's problematic if GCP is not the default within the org.
