Did you know that there’s a competition for unreadable C code? There’s something called IOCCC (International Obfuscated C Code Contest) and they have really really interesting entries in their official website. Have a look!

I expect, sooner or later, a sort of LLM equivalent to Ken Thompson’s classic ‘Trusting Trust’: someone invisibly poisons a major LLM dataset and 25% of all vibe coded apps have vulnerabilities injected with all the subtlety of an IOCCC champion.

Interestingly, the first program in the mag is by a multiple IOCCC winner!

That's like an unintentional version of the International Obfuscated C Code Contest (IOCCC), an annual programming competition for the most creatively unreadable C code.
Really interesting watching a YouTuber trying to guess what the code was going to do without being able to run it first.

In a rare YouTube algorithm win, tonight I got recommended the videos of @lauriewired.bsky.social, and I am absolutely hooked.

I'm three videos in and I don't think there's a more entertaining, interesting, or charismatic coding YouTuber out there.

Her recent IOCCC video is a standout!

This is only a superficially good idea. LLMs are too easy to make. Someone made one as a submission to this years IOCCC. Any one with a computer on the scale of a raspberry pi can make one. :(

The IOCCC still around! I thought they failed around covid, I'm going to go look at everything I have this year it's always fun.

This C code is disgusting. But also really, really clever.

This contest (IOCCC) has been breaking minds since 1984.

Time to find out:
- Can gov-grade tools defeat unreadable code?
- Hiding Salmon in Unicode is not very effective
- Why did I just get Rickrolled?

No, but I was definitely inspired by ioccc! I did a previous one where I actually wrote a little about that: binji.github.io/posts/pokegb/

sadly not, I completely missed it this year 🥲 but also as it is currently written it violates a few of the ioccc size rules, and I'm not sure I can shrink it enough to make it fit...

The 'Obfuscated C Code Contest' Confronts the Age of AI
The contest, which encourages programmers to have fun with C by writing intentionally difficult-to-understand code, was celebrated with a live online ceremony, a revival of a 40-year-old tradition.
