so i went to the Hirshhorn gallery in DC last year. saw this painting ("Lipstick, Lip Gloss, Hickeys Too" by Flora Yukhnovich) and I remember I said:

"this looks like how losing your virginity feels"

which is a crazy thing to say out loud in an art museum, but like, you get it, right? you get it?

photo of an oil painting i took at the Hirshhorn Gallery in Washington DC. Its a pair of nude figures in a natural environment, but its in an abstract expressionist style, so its more like a blurry implication of a pair of nude figures. its very blurry, like everything is moving too fast. it is difficult to say where one figure ends and the other begins.

O'Hare Airport flags remind me of a great exhibit of flags moving in tandem (or not!) by Laurie Anderson at the Hirshhorn a couple of years ago. This video doesn't begin to capture the overpoweringly creepy feeling.
The message was one of fascism and conformity.

This reminds me of a great exhibit of flags moving in tandem (or not!) by Laurie Anderson at the Hirshhorn a couple of years ago. This video doesn't begin to capture the overpoweringly creepy feeling. The message was one of fascism and conformity.

In contrast to Giacometti's normally slow process of reworking portrait sculptures, he molded his plaster animal sculptures, including "Dog" (1951/cast 1957), very quickly. Struck by inspiration while walking in the rain—"One day, I saw myself in the street like that. I was the dog."—Giacometti rushed to create the sculpture immediately, "so as to get rid of the hound once and for all."

🐕 Come closer to sculptures by Alberto Giacometti, including "Dog" (1951/cast 1957), in "Revolutions," only at the Hirshhorn.

Mendieta created a unique genre by using the natural world and her own body as the medium for her art, connecting the human form with the earth. Her work is semiautobiographical, drawing on her experiences as a refugee from Cuba and dealing with the trauma of being torn from her homeland. /4

also it should have been obvious but I just learned that Senga Nengudi makes exhibition copies of her R.S.V.P. sculptures. would love to know if the Hirshhorn has been exhibiting a copy when they've shown it recently or if they show the "real" thing (which itself is a refabrication from 2014)

In 1975, while observing changes in her physical form during pregnancy, Nengudi began her sculpture series R.S.V.P., kinetic formations of nylon pantyhose and sand tethered to the walls, floor, or ceiling, and stretched like skin. Nengudi has described the series as a "conceptual manifestation of the changes a body/form can endure and how much elasticity is left after the pulling and tension cease." On many occasions, Nengudi has invited select performers to dance with the piece, as if answering the series title's call to respond-répondez s'il vout plait (respond if you please). Hassinger has long been a primary partner in the series, and R.S.V.P. X is one of two sculptures that she has previously performed with. Hidden in one of the nylon pouches are dried rose petals, remnants of a flower that Hassinger also uses in her own work."

Senga Nengudi's R.S.V.P. X (1976/refabricated 2014, exhibition copy) at the Pizzuti Collection in Columbus, Ohio. Several pays of brown pantyhose are stretched across the corner of a gallery space, creating a vaguely figurative outline that appears to be bending forward at the feet at a steep angle. The fabric is anchored to the walls at two points with nails, stretching the gap of the corner, and via two weighted sections of fabric on the floor which are filled with sand and rose petals. Another tied section of fabric in the center of the work is filled with the same materials, hanging down from the central point where the fabrics meet.

in the Smithsonian archives yesterday, I learned when the Hirshhorn bought Wolfgang Tillmans' Concorde Grid in 2006, they also got an exhibition copy, so they could show it with the lights turned up, like the artist likes it, without frying their 56 fragile C-prints greg.org/archive/2025...

wolfgang tillmans' grid of 56 photos of the concorde landing or taking off at heathrow airport are all in different formats and vantage points, wherever he was able to capture the image, but all printed at the same size that, to 21st century audience, now echoes a cellphone screen, but in 1997, did not. this edition was acquired by the hirshhorn museum in 2006

at the Hirshhorn in 2017, I saw a Yayoi Kusama exhibit -- INFINITY ROOMS -- with several installations and she immediately became of of my favorite artists
