Gunkanjima Island in Japan: The Haunted Battleship Island
Gunkanjima rises from the East China Sea like a concrete dare, a slab of ambition with corners sharp enough to cut memory. Officially Hashima Island, unofficially Battleship Island, it once pulsed with coal dust, children’s laughter, and the grinding optimism of Japan’s industrial sprint. Then the mines closed in 1974 and the place was abandoned in a single exhale. What remains is a petrified city ringed by sea walls, apartment blocks gutted by wind and salt, corridors that funnel sound into something that feels like voices if the mind is willing.

Twinned with Gunkanjima?

(An abandoned coal mining town crammed onto an island just off Nagasaki, the nickname came as its silhouette resembled that of an IJN battleship).

we were lucky enough to visit gunkanjima (the waves have to be within a certain height for disembarkation), an abandoned island in japan which used to be a coal mine right into the 70s. it was also a really hot day... and there was no shelter on the island 😂

The Haunting Beauty of Hashima Island: Japan’s Ghostly Time Capsule
Off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan lies one of the most striking and eerie relics of the modern industrial age—Hashima Island. Also known as Gunkanjima, or "Battleship Island" for its warship-like silhouette, Hashima was once a symbol of progress and prosperity. Today, it stands as a decaying monument frozen in time, its empty buildings and wind-worn concrete walls offering a silent glimpse into a lost world.

Oh, that's Hashima, an abandoned island off Nagasaki. It's also known as Gunkanjima: Battleship Island. About 60% of it is made up of reclaimed land. It was the site of forced labor during WW2. Shots of it appeared in "Skyfall." The island is opened to tourists, but access is strictly controlled.

Special experiences also included meeting a male geisha, touring Mount Fuji by helicopter, discovering Akane dyeing (that one is rare regenerative tourism) and Takasago dyeing, visiting Gunkanjima and the Iya Valley, and guiding a visually-impaired traveller.

Hashima Island: An Analytical Exploration of Japan’s Abandoned ‘Battleship Island’
Hashima Island, or Gunkanjima, became a prominent coal-mining hub in Japan during industrialisation but was abandoned in 1974 when coal lost economic viability. Currently uninhabited and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts interest for its history and controversy over forced labour during WWII, amid ongoing debates about historical representation.
