This is where I review the story and characters more in-depth, which includes many spoilers. Please only read this part if you've played the game before! (2/4)
I love time travel stories! This one did a pretty good job, I really felt compelled by Grovyle fighting for a better future despite believing he’d disappear and this contrasted really well with Dusknoir doing the opposite in order to avoid that. I also love plot twists and seeing mysteries unravel and boy did this game throw a lot of those/that at me. …I felt bad about assuming Dusknoir was a villain just because he was a Ghost-type, and then turns out Dusknoir was a villain. Earlier when I said the emotional moments hit, I meant it. When Treecko Me sacrificed himself, I actually felt something even though I knew he was gonna come back. Then I actually had to see my partner, Pipper, mourn the loss and then try but fail to adapt to life… well, that strikes a chord. When the credits rolled, I actually shed a little tear. I’m not much of a crier, but I saw my partner crying and I guess I had to too. Normally I appreciate these tragic stories / sacrifices more when they stay tragic (to the point I usually hope they stay tragic), and I knew Treecko Me was coming back, yet when it happened after the credits… I felt a genuine happiness! Not only that but despite the fact I knew Treecko Me was coming back and I was never actually worried, I still felt like it was a relief to see Treecko Me again alive and well. Like a real “Yay, Calculon’s Back!” moment. I’m not entirely sure what the difference is, but it seems like something about this story got me to embrace the happy ending. Or maybe it’s because I’m playing Pokémon and I’m here to be happy. I guess now I can move onto the Special Episodes and Postgame. For the Special Episodes, most of them just felt like “well that was neat” and I couldn’t get quite get invested in them. Except for two. Of course there’s the final one, but I was also surprised how much I appreciated the Igglybuff one and really Wigglytuff’s character as a whole. Not only is Wigglytuff’s happy and free-spirited demeanor so intoxicating but there’s a real cleverness as an explorer and depth to his character despite his overt simple-mindedness, like when he figures out the secret to Armaldo’s map or when he has to break the promise to Lapras for the world’s sake. But also I just love watching him dance with an apple. Wigglytuff’s definitely my favorite out of all the Guild characters. Oh and Chimecho, I can’t not love her! Then there’s In the Future of Darkness. I’ve said early on in the review that I really liked Grovyle as a character and earlier here that I liked his contrast with Dusknoir’s character and motivations. This Special Episode brings both to the forefront and I really appreciated it, especially when Grovyle saw that there was something genuine within Dusknoir despite his final betrayal. It is here that I can’t help but feel my usual wish for the story / sacrifice to have stayed tragic though. I feel like this Special Episode could’ve had Grovyle / Dusknoir / Celebi as the real sacrifice and the Main Story could have the return and happy ending, but I understand why they did it like how they did (because it’s Pokémon). Still a really good Special Episode though and a highlight of not just this game but the entire franchise.

#3: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky (NDS)

Not a very impressive VG thread this year, due to a long list of reasons, but I'm really happy I beat this game in time to end on a high note! Shoutouts to @ssbm-cjag.bsky.social 💚

This is a long review (I guess I'm making up), so strap in. (1/4)
Game Cover for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Sky on the Nintendo DS I’ve not played any PMD game before, nor did I have much interest in doing so before Barry told me to give it a shot. I’d say I’m happy I gave this one that shot now, yeah. I might not be quite as in love with the game as he was or I imagine a lot of people are, but I still thought it was great (one of the better Pokémon games for sure) and it absolutely has its moments! There’s a lot to like about it, and I’d likely love it as much as others do had I played it during my youthful years. +Storytelling is stronger here than most other Pokémon games. Character-wise I actually did feel like I was that Treecko and connected with him, I grew to care for my partner (a Piplup named Pipper), and also greatly appreciated Grovyle as a character. I even really liked Wigglytuff! Plot-wise I liked a lot of the twists, and the emotional moments did hit. I’ll talk a little more about the story later on in spoilers. •Gameplay-wise, I appreciate the deviations from the formula and the more freeroam but still turn-based take on combat. Not as much depth as I’ve come to appreciate in other RPGs, but it works for what it is and kept me engaged well enough (y’know, it’s a game for kids). I haven’t tried a lot of the postgame or superbosses, unsure if I will, but maybe I’ll get the challenge and depth I desire there. -That said, this game’s RNG and some of its mechanics could be frustrating at times. Ghost-types are the worst offender of this. You can’t hit them if they’re in a wall even if they’re right by you, and they Ominous Wind your entire party then gain stat boosts… which lets them do it again. Also multi-hit moves are overpowered in this game, like they will just obliterate you if you’re unlucky enough (not a high threshold). I intentionally did not use them to give myself additional challenge. +My playthrough of this game was rather slow, I’d only play some every few days, but in a strange way it was almost comforting. I came to like turning it on and just getting to be a Treecko doing Explorer things every other day. Made me happy, like I wonder if this is what people who enjoy games like Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley feel like. I don’t usually do postgame stuff, but because of this game’s comfort food-like quality as well as a desire for challenge… maybe I’ll try it! •I like the varied locales, and a lot of their music (Concealed Ruins is so good), but I wish there was a little more to differentiate them gameplay-wise. I also thought the water tile thing only Water-types could walk on was interesting but was left a little disappointed that there wasn’t anything special about them, not even an item at the end of stray water paths, though this might’ve made Water starters too good…

So right after New Year's I went to the store and bought a sketchbook and some pencils and began doing sketches frequently.

I constantly had to remind myself it's ok to not be good at it and to focus more on what I can learn.

I kept up with it, always opening it up whenever I felt unmotivated.
