It’s a close-up photograph of a metallic green fly (commonly called a greenbottle fly) perched on small white flower clusters against a dark background. The fly’s body is iridescent gold-green, and it has large, bright red compound eyes. Its translucent wings show fine veins, while slender black legs grip the flower head. The blossoms themselves are tiny and cream-colored, arranged in a tight cluster on a green stem, and the fly is feeding or resting at the center of one of the blooms.

Day 71: A selection of Green Blowflies. I love the way their metallic blue-green exoskeleton shines.
Unfortunately, their life cycle isn't so beautiful, with maggots feeding largely on dead animal tissue. Sometimes, they also infect living sheep, which isn't pretty. Trust me.

Very unexpected little visitor to the ivy on Saturday morning - and seemed much larger than usual! The photobombing greenbottle is trying on butterfly-wings. A third generation this late in the year is apparently unusual, but could be a sign of our changing times.
