And the Santa Barbara community really, really leans in to its Spanish/Mexican Heritage with the summer Fiesta being a really big multi day deal with parades and performances. You will see lots of little white girls in colorful costumes dancing folklorico dance to mariachi bands.

You hear people talk about how square dancing was taught in public schools as a white supremacist project, but I just walked past a schoolyard where they were teaching baile folklorico and I can't think of anything more likely to crush a kid's interest in a culture than teaching it in gym class

I was really impressed by the “Aquí en Chicago” exhibit. It started when local students rightly noted that the museum barely had anything about the Latine people and culture of Chicago in their exhibits, in 2019.
WELCOME! Aqui en Chicago celebrates the historically persistent cultural presence of Latino/a/e communities in Chicago from the 1800s to the present. These communities make up nearly a third of Chicago's population and a much larger percentage in many suburbs. When students from Instituto Justice and Leadership Academy in Pilsen protested CHM in 2019 for a lack of Latino/a/e representation, they stood on the shoulders of generations of Latino/a/es and allies who worked to overcome race-based injustice and expand inclusion within civic, cultural, and educational spaces. The work of the students inspired this project and our ongoing work to amplify voices from Latino/a/e communities and beyond. This exhibition honors Latino/a/e communities in Chicago and explores varied forms of Latino/a/e resistance, from overt acts, such as protests, strikes, and boycotts, to everyday ones, such as spiritual and linguistic practices, cooking, placemaking, and placekeeping through the arts, monuments, celebrations, and business. It also encourages people to take inspiration from the resistance strategies throughout the exhibition and recognize them in everyday life. Estamos aqui en Chicago. ¡BIENVENIDOS! Aqui en Chicago celebra la presencia cultural y historicamente persistente de las comunidades latinas en Chicago desde el siglo XIX hasta el presente.
