I think this is ultimately why Bring Her Back falls flat for me; the movie isn't really interested in horror as that thematic layering of desire and disquiet. The only character that wants something, in it, is the monstrous anti-maternal biddy figure whose motivations are laid out from the start.

Every spoken word betrays us. The only tolerable form of communication is the written word, since it isn’t a stone in a bridge between souls but a ray of light between stars.~Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet

Fine haul from @kirkdalebooks.bsky.social this afternoon, although the size of that Brautigan book had me leaning at an angle when I left the shop.

'The disquiet people felt when they met him was a primal response, despite the way Elchior had reshaped his intelligence. Understandable, as his name in the proto-language of his people meant 'beast slayer'.

Government defends prospect of paying more than for hotel accommodation
Downing Street has defended the prospect of paying more to house asylum seekers in disused barracks instead of hotels, arguing that quelling public disquiet was worth any extra cost.
As refugee organisations and local politicians described plans to house tens of thousands of people in ex-military sites as “fanciful” and “too expensive”, No 10 said that “communities don’t want asylum seekers housed in hotels, and neither does the government”. Continue reading...

FWS was as inside job. The world knows it. There’s extreme disquiet about it in Europe.
It’s dead and buried - and that’s before it even gets shredded by the European courts.

At 4pm ET, I'll spin some tasty tunes on the radio, at wxdu.org or 88.7 FM locally
There will be lots of new music, e.g., hypnotic jazz meets post-rock from The Necks, gnarly post-punk from Bad Trips, & uplifting electronica from HAAi
And classics from the likes of Chaka Khan & Rotary Connection

Somehow I don't think this plan is going to reduce public disquiet. What happens when there are protests outside of the bases?

Morricone has created a score full of tension based on dissonant music of contemporary art, mixing the orchestra with electronic sounds to describe all the macabre and disquiet side of the plot. The terror atmosphere is broken by two recurrent main themes

I sleep and I unsleep. On the other side of me, beyond where I lie down, the silence of the house touches infinity. I hear time falling, drop by drop, and no falling drop is heard falling.

It's not public disquiet, it's the far right stirring it & being amplified by the toxic press & media. As for the proposals, the heart sinks as Labour again repeat the far right tropes about luxury hotels & the Home Office are happy to pay over the odds again to house asylum seekers.Yuck.

A punky dance floor classic delivering scowling disquiet! Eastern sounds, industrial bleeps, that bass line, - along with John Lyndon at his menacing best - another outfit bringing dance music to this indie kids ears! And all the better for it!
