Today I learned I don't need that much extra equipment/chemicals to make color photo prints in my darkroom. I always thought I needed a color enlarger head for that!

2026 goals (that I'll realistically get around to in like 2028)

This is a wonderful story. Bravo to Charlotte's high school for having a full darkroom.

I was a darkroom tech, BW and e6. It was clear by like 1988 the future was digital, but was not here yet, and till then we had to fight through this incredibly controlled medium, or do something else.

Also, I'm using editing synonymously for developing as if I stood in a darkroom (not what you think), but actually I'm sitting in my chair. Am not talking retouching, which may be a part of the whole thing, but where we tend to alter reality by e.g. removing parts of the image.

RAW ≠ finished image

Scattered Leaves
old shot I redeveloped, because I've learned a lot about the digital darkroom over the last year.

my hottest take is that codegen actually pretty directly stands as a counterpoint to the idea of programming as a creative work. there's photographers, for example, who still dodge/burn in the darkroom.

outside of performance art, what value is hand-written code?

Toning cyanotypes with Haritaki powder / Terminalia Chebula.

I think I like it.

Another thing about Hungary: Did you read Susan Faludi's book about her father, called "In the Darkroom"? It is also a history of Hungary's treatment of Jews. I can't stop thinking about it. Incredible book.

What gets me is the expert tradecraft - absolutely nailing the exposure/aperture so that nothing is washed out/too dark. No instant preview. The photographer got one shot, maybe two, and wouldn't see the result until back in the darkroom. I'd prolly snap 10 shots and hope one would work out.
This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Iconic imo
