Except imitation does not produce prophecy. Imitation does not produce ancestral narratives. Imitation does not produce cosmologies centered on return cycles.

Cargo cults display theological depth, not shallow copying.

🎧🎤 The first episode of Western Edition Season 5 is live!

This episode orients us to a region defined by its aridity and considers how humans have interacted with water over the past two centuries, from Indigenous cosmologies to American conquest.

I don't understand string theory well enough to see a good way forward on the decades-long struggle to find realistic string cosmologies. And I don't like string theory well enough to want to learn more. The current approaches seem elaborate and contrived.

Henry had said that perhaps there were several cosmologies. She thought this was nonsense.

"There are arguments (some older than the authors of this paper) to the effect that we do not expect to have accelerating cosmologies near the boundaries of moduli space, where strings are arbitrarily weakly coupled or we have some other control parameter that can be tuned arbitrarily."

Oh yeah. Asbury's writing is definitely sensationalist, and I wouldn't trust it to be a fully accurate description of old New York, but it's such a tremendously entertaining and captivating book. J.L. Borges, when he compares it to "barbarian cosmologies" in the foreword, is not wrong!

I am fascinated by cosmologies that posit an afterlife that is basically the same as worldly life, like people still have their same professions and still kind of mostly unlive an unlife that looks an awful lot like their terrestrial life

Maybe you need to think about framing in combination with different cosmologies. Like, hey, maybe the multiverse or whatever is a subatomic particle in a larger "macroverse". Then you go back and forth between perspectives from the macroverse and the protagonist. Could be a surprise sequel, even.

Every novel even in the "general genre" offers an implicit descriptive model for the mechanism of cruelty, violence and aggression. It's just that some novels get to use non-scientific cosmologies including crypto-Manichean ones or cosmologies with an originally perfect but later corrupted humanity.
