That's probably quite variable? I've only occasionally experienced it. Usually in the same sessions where people would also look at you funny if you bring a cello along. Mostly I go to Comhaltas sessions though which seem much more welcoming.

irish times politics podcast griping that catherine connolly's focus on gaeilge, and the phrase "tír gan teanga, tír gan anam" means people without gaeilge are less irish

they offer canada & australia as counter examples! they HAD native languages! colonisers destroyed them! that's less soul now!!

Turas go dtí an Bhruseil
Trip to Brussels 🇮🇪 🇧🇪

Bhuail mé le cúigear cainteoir Gaeilge ann, an tseachtain seo! Tá Conradh na Gaeilge, Comhaltas agus CLG suite anseo. Níos Gaelaí ná na Gaeil iad féin?!

Met 5 Irish speakers this wk - lots of Irish organisations! More Irish than the Irish themselves?!

It's almost time for the next show of Songs from the Gaelic World on Cambridge Radio. I'll be chatting to Cambridge bagpipe tutor James Carnegie and to the Chair of the Cambridge branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann. 7.00 pm tonight (Sunday) on 105FM and online.

Cambridge Comhaltas Elastic Band's first ceilidh gig (I was calling; accordion skills not ready for public performance!) I survived teaching a load of KS1 children strip the willow when half of them are still bad at lefts and rights! Note to self: learn more dances with only forwards and backwards.

A new show from Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, with a focus on friendship and celebrating connections, will arrive in Ennis this month for a performance at Cois na hAbhna. As part of a tour of venues across the country the new show, ‘Cairdeas’ will be performed in the Ennis venue on Thursday, October 30. Through words and music, song and dance, ‘Cairdeas’ will bring the audience on a unique journey celebrating how the ancient Irish concept of cairdeas or friendship is central to our culture, forging connections between people and communities throughout our history and down to the present day.

We had Kilteel Eadestown Comhaltas for #CultureNight in Newbridge library & the night was alive with the sound of "seisiún ceoil gaeilge".
We were also given a little snippet of the history of each instrument used.
Thanks you to all who joined us in celebrating Culture night.

This is why Folk England is so important! We also learn Irish trad music through the Comhaltas charity, they are soooo well organised and funded! I think we could learn a lot from them, I loved hearing @elizacarthy.bsky.social talk on that 2 years ago at the Cambridge Folk Festival.

Streets packed with comhaltas musicians and craic. Rumours that celeb musician had been busking and then played a pub so peeled off with fan-daughter to try finding him (again, in my dodgy version of the adventure). No joy getting close but great fun exploring all the little lanes and alleys.
