Childlore is wild! My grade school had a stand of trees nearby, and that stand of trees was definitely haunted by a child eating monster, but I found out from my husband who grew up 2000 miles away that the stand of trees near his grade school was also the home of a child eating monster.

67 — "Six-seven" is dead, a victim of its own virality. Once parents and brands hijacked the phrase, its cool factor evaporated. Rapid lifecycle exposes a bleak reality for modern childlore: sacred playground rituals can no longer survive the suffocating, uncool embrace of the adult internet.

Bryony, a Roma girl has an especial destiny. But to fulfil it, she must risk death, in a #supernatural battle of good over evil.

You will perhaps not be shocked to learn that our dear and treasured readers, whom I truly do adore, are also writing to me to explain the purportedly simple and clear origins of childlore examples I argued in the article should not be understood by seeking explanation for their origins.
I have written an elegy to Six-Seven, which is dead, or at least dying. It is not a meme—memes are the purview of greedy adulthood attention thirst—but a case of Childlore. Though irritating, it should have been left alone.

All of the other childlore mentioned in the article served a purpose or was generally shared within the confines of kid culture. For me, there’s a wide gap between silly “memes” that serve a purpose (constructively killing boredom) and brainrot vocal stims. Stepping off my soapbox, now.

This is an excellent and enjoyable article. I was unaware of the term "childlore" before now. This was an interesting discovery for me since I've used classic bits of childlore as the inspiration for a fair number of short stories. Having a labeled container in which to put things is enlightening.

"Six-seven’s end brings relief, but also sorrow: Childlore, a staple of boy- and girlhood for centuries, has become tenuous and fragile. Being a kid is hard, and it isn’t getting any easier. Even the silly trappings of youth now feel as fleeting as everything else."

Six-seven is a short-lived childlore trend among preteens that spread online but decays once adults adopt it.

Does 6-7 have a purpose other than driving adults nuts? Researchers say it's an example of "childlore," which can play an important developmental role for children. www.edweek.org/leadership/d...
