Culiseta annulata #mosquitoes were recently found for the first time in a glacial valley in Iceland. Iceland was previously one of only two mosquito-free regions globally (the other, Antarctica). Warmer temperatures are expanding the habitat range of this #bunyavirus vector species

DoD still quietly (til now?) funding mRNA research against lethal bunyavirus CCHF, could protect troops in a ME theater. Seemingly beyond RFK Jr's reach.
I hope this continues. I even know of people doing officially verboten research thru agencies other than #NIH.

Exclusive: RFK Jr cancelled mRNA research — but the US military is still funding it
The Department of Defense is continuing to bankroll projects to develop vaccines against deadly pathogens.

Really depends what you want to to do! Engineering viruses or just use viruses to infect mosquito cells. There’s some papers that show bunyavirus canonical piRNAs and role of piwi proteins.

NSs: The Versatile Bunyavirus Virulence Factor
The battle between viruses and the host immune system is a complex and relentless arms race, with each side evolving new strategies to outmaneuver the other. Among the many viral families, bunyaviruses represent a formidable group of pathogens responsible for significant human and animal diseases worldwide. Central to their ability to cause disease and evade the host defenses is a viral protein known as NSs.

DISCOVERY: Virus systematically hijacks tick RNA machinery:
🔹 RNAi pathway: UP (tick defense)
🔹 Translation: UP (viral protein synthesis)
🔹 rRNA processing: DOWN (disrupts cell proteins)
18 proteins both changed activity AND bound viral nucleocapsid!

METHOD: Using RNA interactome capture (RIC), we UV-crosslinks RNA-bound proteins to map the "RBPome" in infected vs healthy tick cells.
Challenge: Bunyavirus RNA lacks poly(A) tails, yet found enough "poly(A)-like" sequences to capture viral RNAs too!

Finally we finalized our omics characterization by looking at the interactors of SFTSV N protein during an active infection. N interactors were mostly related to stress, or RNA regulation pathways. We identified interactors conserved in human, and other associated with immune response to bunyavirus.
