Just started 2nd order ODEs, decided to start with coupled 1st order.

Rationale:

1. Modelling. Start with y'=ky modelling a single population, bring in a second with interaction.
2. Exponential. Solution to single pop is exp, so reasonable to try for double.

In #MathsToday I taught the Chain Rule, one of my lessons was moved to a different classroom on the other side of the college due to resit exams and I can't tell you how traumatic it was. The tables were smaller and the interactive board didn't work. First world problems I know... #ALevelMaths

In #MathsToday I did some CPD for my department on using the CG100 calculator for #ALevelMaths. I used some of the excellent video tutorials by @tayyubmajeed.bsky.social - very helpful, thank you!

A Year 11 student wrote this question as an extension in #MathsToday following on from the questions we worked through below 😮

Definitely will be a fun qu to give my #AlevelMaths classes next week!

Been teaching Quadratic Inequalities and Trig Graphs to my year 11s recently so put this together for them as a challenge!

Will also give it to my year 12s and see how they do...

Nice little activity with further today, give them a function, eg f(x)=x²+1, {x:x<3}, and they have to say whether it is many to one or one to one, and if it is many to one a reason why (eg in this case f(-2)=f(2)), & if it is one to one to give the inverse function #alevelmaths #mathstoday

In #mathstoday my further mathematicians told me it was their favourite A Level as "it makes us realise how everything links up" 😁😁 #ALevelMaths

Wrote a very quick write up of our session at #Mathsconf39 about using Variation Theory in #AlevelMaths including the PPT that we used.

If you came to the session and have any feedback for us please do let me know here or via email [email protected]

In #MathsToday my #ALevelMaths students did some work on trig identities using the double angle formulas. I'm excited to get stuck into differentiation after half term!

Y13 did their first set of integration looky-likeys in #MathsToday. Looking forward to lots more of this in the next few weeks!

The last one was a bit mean (I put it there to slow down the fast finishers) but they did manage it when I gave them the right substitution. #ALevelMaths

Anyone else not-so-patiently waiting for Senior Maths Challenge results? They were out by this time last year. Students are pestering me 😅

Deriving the Compound Angle Formulae today. I quite like numbering the triangles first so the workings don’t look *too* messy #MathsToday #ALevelMaths

In #MathsToday my year 2 further maths students were introduced to the exponential form of a complex number. I always love sharing Euler's identity with them... three of the big-player constants of maths combining together to make -1 always feels like an important moment! #ALevelMaths

In #MathsToday #Alevelmaths I was doing my usual taster day session with Gauss' adding the integers 1-100. When I got to 5050 a student got up and stormed out!

Did this with my year 13s in #Alevelmaths as a gentle warm up.

Getting them to guess what f(x) and g(x) was and to find each area depending on their functions was less gentle! #Mathstoday

A bonus area problem for the end of the week, inspired by a post by @mrlevmaths.bsky.social.

Important info from the alt-text: the curve is a parabola.

#ALevelMaths #MathsToday
I saw your labels and thought these represented the actual areas (as in the area of region 1 is 1 unit, of region 2 is 2 units, etc...) which got me thinking that that sort of thing might make a nice problem. Impossible to get regions with those areas using a parabola, but I came up with this:

In #MathsToday I made 40 A Level teachers colour in representations of the binomial distribution.

This is your regular reminder that if you teach #ALevelMaths you should definitely try to join your local Maths Hub’s A Level Pedagogy group. There is some brilliant stuff going on all over England.

Further Maths today: used the method of differences to prove the summation of squares formula, thus also foreshadowing MoD as a more general technique.

Unfortunately, only left myself 3 minutes to do the sum of cubes.

Did it in 2.

In #MathsToday my #ALevelMaths classes got stuck into the compound angle formulas, after deriving them yesterday we looked at their applications in proofs and solving and then I introduced the harmonic form, we'll explore this further later in the week.

In #MathsToday I was doing some preparation at lunchtime with 10 #ALevelMaths students taking TMUA in a few weeks. We were looking at logical statements... converse, contrapositive and counterexample. I always have to remind myself which is which out of the first two! 😅
