I rated The Raven (1963) 3/10 #IMDb Vincent Price must do battle with Boris Karloff in this comedy horror that is neither funny or scary. Peter Lorre gets in some ad-libbed quips while Jack Nicholson is dressed up as if he’s in a panto. It all just feels like a complete waste of talent and time.

I rated High Noon (1952) 9/10 #IMDb Town sheriff Gary Cooper learns that a violent criminal is coming for revenge on the midday train, but none of the townsfolk will help. Essentially the Western equivalent of “The Little Red Hen”. The cast is great, as is the pacing.

I rated Tron: Ares (2025) 6/10 #IMDb Jared Leto is an AI program sent to track down Greta Lee in the real world. The aesthetics are great, as is the 80s techno soundtrack, and Lee is good as the lead. Enjoyable but overall it feels paint-by-numbers and risk free. Jeff Bridges goes full Lebowski.

I rated Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025) 7/10 #IMDb Episode 6 sees Brec Bassinger save everyone from a building collapse and years later Death has found her family. The improved CGI goes a long way and the story is a refreshing take on the tired formula. Good fun and very bloody throughout.

I rated Final Destination 5 (2011) 6/10 #IMDb Nicholas D’Agosto saves some work mates from a deadly bridge collapse. A better instalment than the last two outings, particularly the beginning & ending. The CGI is noticeably better. David Koechner’s clearly enjoying himself.

I rated The Final Destination (2009) 4/10 #IMDb Bobby Campo saves his friends from disaster at a stock car race. This is the fourth instalment, and like its predecessor brings nothing new to the series and is actually pretty boring. The best thing is it clocks in at a merciful 82 minutes.

I rated Final Destination 3 (2006) 5/10 #IMDb Mary Elizabeth Winstead has a premonition of dying in a rollercoaster accident and changes Death’s plan. Although it’s got some narsty death scenes, FD3 brings nothing new to the table and is pretty much painting by numbers.

I rated Final Destination 2 (2003) 7/10 #IMDb A.J. Cook cheats Death by not taking part in a multi-car pile up. After the first hilarious 15 minutes, it’s banger after banger with ridiculous death scene after ridiculous death scene. Much more enjoyable than the 1st outing.

I rated Final Destination (2000) 6/10 #IMDb Devon Sawa saves himself and a bunch of his friends from boarding a doomed flight to Paris, but Death ain’t happy. It’s an entertaining idea with some good shocks and a silly cameo from Tony Todd, but unfortunately none of the characters are likeable.

I rated Mr. Burton (2025) 6/10 #IMDb Toby Jones is Philip Burton, school teacher of one Richard Jenkins who would go on to become Richard Burton. Well acted and certainly a piece of history I knew nothing about, but it’s all a bit slow and dry.

I rated The Ballad of Wallis Island (2025) 6/10 #IMDb Lottery winner Tim Key invites his favourite singer Tom Basden to a private gig on a remote island. It’s a nice little film overall but it’s not very funny - Tim Key has some good moments but his one-note quirkiness is grating.

I rated Paths of Glory (1957) 9/10 #IMDb Kirk Douglas is a Colonel of the French army who is tasked with capturing the “Ant Hill”, which leads to failure and court martial. One of the best WWI movies and probably Douglas’ best film. In 4K, Stanley Kubrick’s wide-angles are crisp and give true scale.

I rated A Foreign Field (1993) 6/10 #IMDb Leon McKern, Alex Guinness and John Randolph star as three ex-soldiers visiting France, rekindling old flames and remembering the WW2. Not as interesting as Monsignor Quixote but it’s a reasonably well-acted TV movie.

I rated The Dresser (1983) 8/10 #IMDb Tom Courtenay is the personal assistant to the deteriorating veteran actor Albert Finney who must go on stage as King Lear during the Blitz. A masterclass in acting from the two leads, with an excellent pay-off in the last 5 minutes.

I rated A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (2025) 6/10 #IMDb Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie meet at a wedding and on their return home they step through doors into their past. Interesting & entertaining. Not too twee but not as punchy as it needs to be. Similar in tone to Takahata’s anime Only Yesterday.

We’re very much focused on developing the culture of the cohort over the next few years - it’s great to see we’re on similar lines
