#WhatIsItWednesday – this artefact, dating from #WW1, is a cigarette case carried in the breast pocket by Lance Cpl “Lottie” Collins of the 2nd Bn, Welsh Reg. It saved his life when he was wounded by rifle fire during the Battle of the Aisne, September 1914. #collection #history #museum

It was a Braille notepad.

This makes up for crashing out of today’s #Wordle though I’m sure my nerd knowledge will be found lacking next week. In the meantime happy me!

#WhatIsItWednesday – here's an unusually framed memorial plaque or death penny. Sent to the families of those who died during #WW1, this one commemorates Pte Gwilym Lewis, 5th Bn, SWB, who died on the 26th October 1917, during the third Battle of Ypres. #lestweforget

#WhatIsItWednesday? Here we have a 1935 pattern Luftwaffe steel helmet with national decal and eagle and swastika emblems on it. It was found in Sicily by a soldier of the Welch Regiment in 1943.

#WhatIsItWednesday? This is a Pegasus car bonnet mascot, which was fixed to the front of the jeep used by Lt Col C. H. Bowker. Lt Col Bowker commanded the 5th Battalion, Welch Regiment, during the campaign in northwest Europe, 1944/45.

#WhatIsItWednesday this unusual artefact is a Zulu boy shield brought back from Africa as a souvenir by C/Sgt Bourne, 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment. C/Sgt Bourne was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his part in the Defence of Rorke’s Drift, 1879.

#WhatIsItWednesday – this odd-looking artefact is a bible bound with wood to protect it while crossing the Orange River in South Africa! The bible belonged to Private Fred Walby who served with the South Wales Borderers during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).

#WhatIsItWednesday? This large, unusual and rather beautiful artefact from our collection is a #Victorian carriage rug. It was made by Private Amni Lathrope, 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment, whilst stationed out in India between 1857-1859. The rug is made from pieces of uniform.
