Não sei como está hoje, mas até um tempo atrás grandes empresas forçavam bancos para pequenas empresas. Aqui na firma os produtos legados usam Hibernate e a troca de banco é POR CONFIGURAÇÃO, troca no .properties mesmo!
Depois que a empresa cresceu ligaram o folha-se e usam VoltDB.

    Suggested ways to improve latency are caching, replication, better branch prediction etc. But since then we have also seen trends in using durable in-memory databases increase e.g. Redis, VoltDB etc. Also we have seen rise of faster storage media like SSDs. (2/3)

        You should take a look at VoltDB, maybe, as part of the solution. In some cases it can be quite fast and flexible.
