Anything that UpCodes can do, a combination of a conflict-checking tool with a LLM can do better and cheaper…and without the hypocrisy.

Congrats to UpCodes, Inc. on another year of profiting off of access to the law, access that was made free to all of us thanks to Veeck vs. SBCCI.

Care to share your revenue???
Congrats to ICC on another record revenue year. 🤑

More proof that you don't need a monopoly on the law itself to be extremely profitable. 😌

I’ve never used UpCodes so I don’t know why this would be bad, exactly. We lose third-party publishing of current codes & their derivatives? Would they get to charge governments for a license to publish? Would bots not be allowed to ingest the code? What’s the case for copyright?

I love upcodes, I’m a DIY’er and it made it super easy to follow codes for a bunch of products like installing a water heater and a hot tub.

Context is US courts have ruled that standards organizations like the ICC lose their copyright on codes and standards once they are adopted into law, under the logic that you cannot copyright the law. ICC and others are trying to change that with the Pro Codes Act, which might make UpCodes illegal.

I can't figure out if Minnesota/Minneapolis adopts Appendix D. Upcodes has it grayed out statewide, suggesting it does not, but I can't find a primary source for that. The city/state do not seem to believe that it's important that architects be able to determine what rules they have to design to.

(Don’t tell me UpCodes, it’s not comprehensive enough for what I want.)
