And this is what it was before it was the bus barn. Behold "Snelling Station", the primary maintenance facility for the Twin Cities Rapid Transit streetcar system and major regional employer. Like the Pennsylvania Railroad, TCRT built everything in house, from the vehicles to the light poles.

Okay, so the city of St. Paul was chasing TCRT nonsense throughout the 1950s. This is from the summer of 1958 and is the last I have on my computer, but that's because my grandfather left the city in 1959 so wasn't involved anymore and I wasn't hunting for TCRT stuff specifically.
Realty Sale Probed At TCRT Quiz Towey 'Unable To Shed Light. On Purchasers' James H. Towey, secretary and treasurer of the Twin City Rapid Transit Co., today told the railroad and warehouse commission he did not know who bought four pieces of company property in St. Paul in 1953 and 1954 for $180,000. The purchaser of record was the Hillcrest Development Corp. Marshall Hurley, St. Paul corporation counsel, asked Towey who the officers of the corporation were. "I don't know," the witness replied. Hurley asked him if he knew anybody connected with the corporation. Towey at first said he didn't know anybody. Finally he sald a man named Tankenoff had a connection with the company. "That is Alex Tankenoff." Hurley said. "Haven't you known him for years, just as I have?" "Yes, but I don't know it he was an officer or not," Towey replied. "I only know that he represented them." He also said he didn't know whether the Hillcrest concern was a corporation or a partnership. He said he was sick at the time the properties were sold. Hurley asked him it he ever made any inquiries after he got well as to who actually had bought the properties. He said he had not. "Weren't you interested, as an officer and director of the company, in finding out something about the deal?" Hurley wanted to know. "I thought we got a good price for the properties," Towey said. Hurley asked him who handled the sale of propertles in the Twin Cities for the company, and Towey said he didn't know that either. Previously he was asked why B. M. Larrick was fired as general manager. He declined to reveal any of the discussion in the board of directors' meeting at which it was decided to drop Larrick. Asked for his personal opinion, he said it was his understanding that Larrick had been hired because of his experience in converting traction companies from streetcars to buses, and not for his ability as a general manager, although Larrick bore that title and stayed on for three years after the conversion was completed. Paul A. Rasmussen, commission member, asked Towey if he thought it was sound practice for the company to pay out more in dividends than it earned. Towey said that the surplus had been earned in the war years and that he thought the stockholders had a right to the money. St. Paul Dispatch 24 Jul 1958, p. 15.

I didn't realize that the TCRT streetcar "barn"/ factory at Snelling and University came right up to the street. This photo is from 1957, after the streetcars were mothballed and it had become decrepit. Maybe someday we'll have buildings there again.

This is the fourth pic in the sequence, with the entire streetcar (salute, Car 1468!!) engulfed in flames/smoke. Ossana stares off into the distance and as much as I'd like to ascribe feelings to him due to his expression, I'd guess he was just staring into space, waiting for the final photo op.

Many LRT Trip Agents out on the rails today. I saw one helping a tourist, and another dealing with an overdose. This is a highly effective low impact safety strategy, and evokes the TCRT streetcar conductors of old. Good work Metro Transit. Do more of this.
