This prompt gave me an excuse to dig up my pirate wip that LMAO Here's this one scene w Taliesin here hiding in a rowboat that he REALLY shouldn't have been hiding in, overhearing a money dispute between smugglers and a pirate (Blight).

“That just won’t do,” Blight mutters. “You know how much the Captain loathes when I come back empty-handed.” He then lifts the weapon up. Taliesin’s eyes widen when he realizes that the man is wielding a large axe. It is held in a firm grip, and he is shocked that this man seems to have no issues wielding it or swinging it with one hand. The motion is fluid and quick, with barely a second to register what happens when it makes impact with one of the smugglers. The head is lobbed clean off from the neck, and the body falls in a bloody heap on the ground as the head rolls down the dock and into the bay. Taliesin cannot help the terrified whimper he lets out. He curls up and covers himself tighter with the sheets, trying to quell his trembling when hearing the other smuggler scream from terror. Even if he wanted to keep his emotions at back tonight, he can now feel tears running down his cheeks. “Blight, what the fuck?!” “Shut your hole,” Blight snaps, and Taliesin can hear a hard blow that quiets the screams. In its place is a terrified little whimper. “Now, listen here. Mr. Unger owes heavy debts. The Captain is demanding results, and I will now explain to him that your boss cannot deliver. You have until the end of the month, before he pulls into port. You lot better have our supplies by then, or he will ever do business with Mr. Unger again. This is his last chance. They will not be deceived again. Do you understand?” “Yes, I understand,” the surviving smuggler whimpers. “I understand, I swear. I’ll tell him!” “Good.” Blight’s footsteps approach the end of the dock, near the boat where Taliesin is hiding. “I spared you once. You won’t be so lucky a second time.” Taliesin gasps when he can feel the weight of Blight’s weapon on top of him. The boat rocks a bit from the man’s weight as he climbs in, as well. He stays as still as possible, and he keeps his hand covering his mouth. “Waste of my time,” Blight grumbles, and the boat begins to move as he is rowing.

MINIMIZING, DENYING AND BLAMING: * Making light of the abuse and not taking her concerns about it seriously. * Saying the abuse didn't happen. * Shifting responsibility for abusive behavior. * Saying she caused it. (The original wheel uses gendered language, but I'd like to note that although abuse is most often perpetrated by men against women, abuse can happen in any kind of relationship and to people of any gender.) In the brilliant documentary Graphic Sexual Horror, which profiles a now-defunct BDSM porn site, there's footage of a scene with a porn model named S4. The dominant partner slaps S4 across the face, and S4 reacts angrily. She says something like, "We didn't talk about that in advance!" The dominant doesn't apologize; he doesn't take her seriously, and he doesn't talk to her carefully or work to calm her down. Instead, the dominant partner snaps: "We can't talk about everything in advance," and aggressively demands to know whether she's ready to continue. This is an example of minimizing, denying, and blaming. I have some sympathy for his awkward position -- I've made small mistakes as a dominant partner, too, and he's correct that it's impossible to talk about everything in advance. But the way to deal with those mistakes is by apologizing sincerely and making sure the mistake never happens again. For example, one of my exes really hated being bitten on the lips, and at one point I bit him on the lower lip. And he called me out, and I said, "I'm sorry," and I put my arms around him to offer comfort; I said, "I won't do it again,” and I didn't. My experience of BDSM relationships is that it's best for there to be both communication ahead of time -- and lots of discussion and processing afterwards. Both partners get to set "hard limits": things they absolutely don't want to do. If one partner has concerns, those concerns get airtime.
