#Smoot-Hawley
Wow who could have predicted that the “Age of the Robber Barons 2.0” would result in the beginnings of Smoot Hawley outcomes.

Lethope it does not reach the same levels.

Trump & his kakistocratic regime are intent on bankrupting America & by extension the world.

They want to blow it all up.

My grandmother cursed Herbert Hoover until the day she died - he pushed through Smoot-Hawley tariff policies.

But this time it will work.

Oder jemand, der ihm "Ferris Bueller's day off" zeigt.
"Trump warf Kanada in seinem Post vor, für den Bau keine amerikanischen Produkte wie Stahl genutzt zu haben."
"Die Brücke müsste auch mindestens zur Hälfte den USA gehören, forderte er."

Wer noch Verträge mit den USA schließt und denkt, diese würden eingehalten, ist mit dem Klammerbeutel gepudert.

Smoot-Hawley tariff—not a New Deal measure—protected the hand embroidered handkerchief industry from Chinese competition. This led to more jobs in the needle trades during the 1930s.

Anyone that has seen Ferris Buellers Day Off knows. There is a scene with Ben Stein (the “Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?” Teacher) talking about how bad the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 was. A movie from the 80s knew. Any Gen Xer that believes taffies are good is in a Cult & hopeless. We were warned.

The irony IMO is the 1930 Smoot Hawley tariffs made Hitler and many “strong men” popular around the world in the wave of nationalism that swept the globe from the crippling tariffs 🇺🇸 exacted. Just like now. Even Perl Harbour was 🇯🇵 getting angry at being strangled over their rubber supplies.

Smoot-Hawley passed in 1930, not '26, but your point stands - Hoover signed it despite a petition from 1,028 economists warning against it. Coolidge was still president in '26 and basically asleep at the wheel while speculation ran wild.

You might recall that Smoot-Hawley was enacted 8 months AFTER the October 1929 crash. It certainly exacerbated things.
And yes, as his niece says “Donald has multiple undiagnosed & untreated psychiatric disorders”.

I'm not sure. I feel like the effects of Smoot Hawley were widely known before it was signed into effect.

FDR’s socialism New Deal and WWII got us out of Great Depression. But, Drumpf’s 2nd Gilded Age is for oligarchs to go unregulated & rape us. Drumpf tariffs will keep us downward spiraling, as 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariffs Act did, with beggar-thy-neighbor tit for tat. Socialism vs Fascism? Let me think😏

When Republicans passed the Smoot-Hawley tarrif bill in 1930, unemployment doubled in the 1st year.
It doubled again in the 2nd.
Republicans lost their majority, and it stayed lost for a very long time.
That's why they're busily preparing to steal the next election.
They can't possibly win it.

Mexico's latest tariffs on India aren't just 'bad luck.' This is a classic move in the 'controlled trade' playbook, echoing Smoot-Hawley & Trump's China tariffs. Protectionism always has a strategic motive. #TradeWars #Geopolitics

Smoot-Hawley tariffs caused the Great Depression, and Trump’s are attempting a repeat.

Not the depression, but the in 2009 the recession absolutely. That was also caused by greed. But the Smoot-Hawley tariffs were widely thought to be a great contributor to the great depression. Trump‘s tariffs aren’t helping us at all, certainly not helping my grocery bill and cost of living.

The Smoot Hawley act,
Tried tariffs before,
Made the great depression,
Hurt a lot more,
It is better to remain mute,
Than to prove yourself a fool,
Stick to designing Zinny,
Economics doesn't suit you.
If you post shit like this, don't come darken my doorstep. I want to be as clear as possible.

The Smoot-Hawley Act increased tariffs on foreign imports to the U.S. by about 20%. Over 25 countries responded by increasing their own tariffs on American goods. Global trade plummeted, contributing to the ill effects of the Great Depression

Did you know one of the causes of the Great Depression I'm the 30's was the Smoot Hawley Tarriff act which slapped a 20% Tarriff on foreign goods. An isolationists government as well as an inability by them to act when the stock market crashed.
Sound familiar?

I would put you ahead of the Smoot Hawley Tariff Act for sure.

America imports trillions of dollars of foreign goods each year, and tariffs are taxes on those purchases.

Over the past year, Trump PERSONALLY raised average U.S. tariffs to about 17 percent, the highest level since 1932, in the wake of the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, a cause of the Depression.

Because of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act (1930) and other tariffs, smuggling Swiss watches into the United States became lucrative. That was the case in 1930, when a Brooklyn businessman tried to bring those Swiss watches from Canada into New York City to avoid the tarrifs.
When Smuggling Swiss Watches Was A Thing - New York Almanack
In 1930 over 2,000 Swiss watches being smuggled into the U.S. from Canada were confiscated between Lake George and Glens Falls.

You would be surprised. WSJ may recognize low-information voters just don’t get it. There are those who still believe Drumpf is socking it to our foreign trade partners. They need to read up on the disastrous 1930’s Smoot-Hawley Tariffs Act that led to Beggar-Thy-Neighbor.

New study suggests that re-enacting infamous economic calamities like the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act may potentially create a disastrous economic calamity.

Imagine how fucked we’d be if the boomers didn’t have all of that imaginary money in a stock market that is now completely detached from reality.
What's most amazing about this is the fact that the WSJ needed a “study” to figure it out.
