#SmartGates
First negative experience to report, and ironically, not at the US border.

My US passport worked to print a receipt for the smartgates at Sydney Kingsford Smith, but then I walked up to the checkpoint, and bzzt. "Sorry, you can't be automatically processed."

All smooth after, ABF waved me through.

‘… more than two million travellers who used SmartGates and 2.6 million using manual passport processing were removed from the figure after being classified as “outliers” because their clearance took more than three minutes.

Quite a speedy experience through DXB Terminal 1 today - the #smartgates are really something, even when facial recognition doesn’t nail it 100% of the time.

‘Only 76 per cent of outbound travellers used the SmartGates system, still below the intended 90 per cent mark. Home Affairs has reduced its target to 70 per cent of passengers using SmartGates.

It’s weird, Ho Chi Minh City airport has 4 smartgates for passports but I’ve never seen anyone use them.

This is my go-to for links to the studies as well. When I worked at Customs there was a lot of work on this for the SmartGates. It's slightly different there as it's matching to a known photo under controlled conditions, but the system being trained on mostly white dudes was a big weakness.

SmartGates has been crippled by technical failures, even as the contract with one provider, IDEMIA, surged from $22m to $113m over 5 years. The system's roll-out has been coupled with a reduction in staffed desks, delays during peak arrival times & technical outages at #airports. #melbourne #sydney

‘… leaving tired passengers stranded in delays after flights of up to 14 hours.

‘However, internal Home Affairs data shows only 57 per cent of inbound travellers use SmartGates.
