Gotta shout out Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga. It's so deep and wide: cultures with customs and history and clothes all meshing together, and at the same time many DIFFERENT ones that all get fleshed out.

I'm gonna have to say both Dune and Hyperion have amazing worldbuilding in them. Just plain sink-your-teeth-in sort of storytelling. Probably not a surprise to anyone, as both these series are pretty well established lol

A sci-fi book you've read with great worldbuilding
I want to mention one of my recent favorites here, because it doesn't get nearly enough attention.

It's fantastic. And there are no human characters! The knyads are a fascinating, semi-aquatic species

Well, Im a bit of a homebody, so it would be a tough sell. As a vacation? Maybe. Most places in the 5 Galaxies Commonwealth seem harmless enough. It would definitely be an experience.

Depends on the world!
Bisection: I would find Kinaru nice for a tour, but I wouldn't stay. Shatak would be a good place to live.
Imperial Mars: Mars and Earth are both terrible, but I'd happily go to Venus.
Invasive: I definitely don't belong there and would get eaten by a tree.

Too much fraud and fear tied up in the government. And way too many creatures designed to spread death and disease.
Now, though?
Seems like a holiday destination!

29. I'd visit for sure, but like...a Mannshe core world or something, around museums, monumental areas, historical areas, where they're likely to be grand, stately, stoic, and safe, but with all the finest amenities and conveniences. The Veshavan Majesty is simply too damn loud.

I would absolutely go to my world. For WIP 3, if I can live in the Empire it would be a dream come true. Despite technically being a dictatorship, it’s a high-tech utopia.
I will be talking about my WIP 3 (which is titled “The Alliance”) this month. There’s also a non-canon alternate universe spinoff story currently under the title “Warped Metal.”

I think I would visit the Akrodaxis, especially if I could be an årdrakin when I did it. Despite the grim circumstances surrounding our introduction to this galaxy, I think overall it's an exciting, interesting place that has a lot going for it.

Would you go to the world you've made?
The future Earth as seen in Wraith and the Revolution: No.
Megatropolis might be fun to visit, but I wouldn't want to stay (too many people)
Botanaar: Definitely yes. I like trees.
Space: What's the scale of your story?
Wraith and the Revolution is set in the Milky Way galaxy, and the MC travels to a number of locations beyond Earth/Sol System throughout the book. It doesn't span the entire galaxy (there are still uncharted regions to explore.) 1/

Here's a bit from one of the philosophical dialogues in The Blue Poppy. I don't know if these will make it into the final draft but I just love to write the main couple chatting about what it means to be a person.

Kinda mentioned already, but most species have a negative attitude towards robots. Either because they don’t want to give up their servants, fear, or just plain irrational hate.

Not really characters in this WIP, but there are various household robots which scurry around so far. Technically, River has a chain which is sentient but he doesn't know it well enough yet. Robots don't have rights, they are objects.

25. People who cross the "human threshold" lose their rights once they become what can be seen as machines with biomechanical components, which is extremely illegal in most places. Partly for control, partly a strict regulation measure, partly an ethical issue.

24. AI that isn't in a robot body
Tasked with monitoring and policing all traffic in and out, among myriad other responsibilities, planetary defense networks are essentially planet-sized AI brains capable of lethal action if necessary.

While most manatech--technology using magic to function--is safe and common, there have been harmful versions in the past that have threatened to drain too much mana from the world around it.
In fantasy, sometimes magic has some kind of cost or damage it does. But that can happen in sci-fi too: cybernetic upgrades that damage the body, warp drives that distort space. What tradeoffs do your characters have to make?

23. None here unfortunately! Only a very underdeveloped cast manning a contracted space mapping vessel. One of them isn't legally human because they crossed the implant/prosthetic threshold a long time ago. All that's left is a modified nervous system and augmented brain.
Got any charming robots, computer voices, roombas with personality? Tell us about one!

Finally getting back to this 😅 But the Baloran--the ship the main crew uses--definitely isn't top of the line. And while most demons use a limiter to hide their demon forms, Victor has a faulty one that leaves his scales showing on half his face.
You know how the Star Wars universe is full of cool inventions, but Han is driving a grody old ship? Often our characters don't have access to the best there is. They make do with old, broken, or out-of-date machines.
