#RetroNAS
Look into RetroNas as well. It’s been nice having a single places for game backups.

I’ve been using a CIFS share for MiSTer but yeah it’s finally time to level up to RetroNAS

That's what I do, yeah. There probably is some hacky way to create custom Steam entries for games on NAS storage I'm not aware of, but I haven't bothered since it would just make library navigation on my Deck unwieldy because of how many systems with complete libraries I have stored on my RetroNAS.

I REALLLLLY need to do a RetroNAS

(I already have a MiSTer device because I'd bought the Multisystem in 2021 which was back then a nice way of consolizing the MiSTer... But I never added a retroNAS to my setup...)

And since I have one of these beauties on the way....

I should do that...

I also have a conventional NAS for other stuff and I like having both. You can achieve some of what RetroNAS does on those other devices, but it requires a lot more fine tuning and possibly require security protocol compromises to have it all on one device. This is just easier and more "hygienic."

Ah gotcha! Yeah, once you get past the initial installation process for the RetroNAS, it's generally easy to get the platform modules up and running. Basically just set and forget aside from adding games. RetroNAS also uses symlinks across its own folders if multiple platforms can use that data.

Oh yeah, I'd already been looking into them anyways, but you're the first person I've seen with firsthand exprience with the RetroNAS setup mainly, which is good for actual feedback from an end user!

In your case, though, you might want a more conventional NAS if you just need a repository for emulators. RetroNAS is great for that and I use it for that, too, but if you want to stream video to your TV or use multiple HDDs for data redundancy, you'll be better served by a more mainstream device.

The Deck can be more fiddly, but the idea is the same. If an emulator isn't built to load games via network, you can create what's called a symlink somewhere on the Deck to the RetroNAS itself. That'll treat the RetroNAS like a folder on your device and the emulator will just think it's local data.

For emulators on PC specifically, generally, once you give Windows the login credentials to your RetroNAS, you can load roms from the file browser as if they were still stored locally. You can even save that address as a favorite in Windows Explorer to always have ready access to it.

There are guides on the GitHub wiki that go into specifics for each platform. But the basic idea is: You install RetroNAS, you add the modules for platforms you want to use, you put the games in the relevant folders, and then you input the RetroNAS' networking info on those platforms to connect them

Honestly can't recommend RetroNAS as a platform for cross-device ROM access and management enough. Extremely versatile and supports a ton of platforms/protocols. Bought it for my PS2, but also routinely use it on my PS3, Mister, and even my XP build to seamless transfer files from Win 11. Love it. 😌

Reminder that, like their Mister Pi (which I have and love!) this is Mister-based and runs all the existing cores. Highly recommend pairing this with RetroNAS if you don't have an existing solution to streamline ROM management. Can be achieved cheaply with a Raspberry Pi attached to a USB drive.

Anyone running an @unraid.net server (maybe with #RetroNAS installed?) want to upgrade the NIC to 2.5Gbe? I found one that was basically plug & play. Links and more info in the post: retrorgb.com/2-5-gigabit-...
2.5 Gigabit PCIe Ethernet Adapter for UnRAID Servers - RetroRGB
https://youtu.be/JhvXS0l8HEc After recently upgrading to an awesome Ubiquity Dream Router 7, I figured I'd also upgrade the NIC in my UnRAID server as well to match it (and my main PC's) 2.5Gbe speeds...

If you have the network adapter you can already stream PS2 games from your LAN using RetroNAS.

Something was quite right with the first 98SE install I had on here. Disk usage seemed very slow, network driver kept crashing, sound driver was buggy under DOS. Now everything just works and even connects online and my retroNAS.

My 'RetroNAS' running Open Media Vault - Hosting backups of all my retro software, OS's, games, roms, disk images, bios dumps and more.
It's good to have a dedicated device in my workshop that's accessible by older devices over the network. 💾👍

@pobx.bsky.social I've got that HP Microserver permanently setup as a 5TB retroNAS now, thanks so much again mate! 👍

RetroNAS is a neat project but if I'm doing a retro SMB server i want it to be WAY weirder. the Solaris SMB server was released in 1999
