The youth of Greater Pibor and Jonglei, the numerically dominating here and now rather than the future of their country, have a key role to play to make any description of peace a reality

(JUBA) - Governor Rabi Mujung Emmanuel of Central Equatoria State has urged churches and local communities to work hand in hand with state authorities to promote peace, unity and security. The Governor delivered this message during his address to the Murle Congregation at Akatgol Presbyterian Church in Juba on Sunday, 7 September 2025. The Governor highlighted the urgent need to curb child abductions and cattle raiding, particularly at Mogiri Cattle Market, a frequent flashpoint for conflict between herders and traders from neighbouring Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

(POCHALLA SOUTH COUNTY) – More than 100 families have been displaced and farmland destroyed after flash floods swept through four villages in Pochalla South County, Greater Pibor Administrative Area, local officials confirmed on Wednesday. According to Greater Pibor Information Minister Jacob Werchum, three consecutive days of heavy rainfall forced families to abandon their homes and seek temporary shelter in nearby villages.

In an initiative supported by the United Nations, a mobile court is being deployed to the Pibor region of South Sudan, according to Africa News on August 14th. Greater Pibor is an area of Sudan with a vibrant culture, traditions and history, but is ridden with crime. Cattle raiding, sexual violence, and child abduction are now part of the culture and a source of conflict between communities.

Girls and women in certain areas of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) and Jonglei State have raised concerns over a lack of security and protection in light of increasing incidents of abduction by armed individuals. In South Sudan, particularly in the troubled region of Greater Jonglei and its surroundings, child abduction has long been a prevalent issue. This harmful practice has persisted for years, with children, particularly girls, being the primary targets.

The Minister of Information for Greater Pibor has appealed to the national government to introduce programmes and initiatives aimed at engaging the youth to address the rising insecurity in the region. Jacob Werchum's plea comes in the wake of escalating insecurity, including incidents of road ambushes, cattle raids and child abductions, as highlighted by the Commissioner of Pochalla North County two weeks ago.

(GREATER PIBOR ADMINISTRATIVE AREA) – For generations, Greater Pibor has been a land rich in cultural traditions, where communities celebrate identity through ceremonies, spiritual practices, and distinctive attire. Yet alongside these positive customs, cycles of cattle raiding, sexual violence, and child abduction have left deep scars. These harmful practices, often normalised in local conflicts, have long gone unpunished, fuelling revenge attacks and instability.

(PIBOR) – Authorities in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) have begun a week long screening exercise aimed at removing so called “ghost workers” from government payrolls. The term refers to non existent employees who are recorded as working but continue to receive salaries. The screening process began on Monday following a decision reached at the Council of Ministers meeting held last Friday.

(PIBOR AREA) – For years, running a small restaurant in Pibor town was a daily struggle for Rebecca Zuagin. Selling tea and porridge seemed simple in theory, but insecurity and flooding made it nearly impossible in practice. “The experience was painful,” she recalled. “Insecurity was one challenge, but the flooding was relentless. My restaurant would be under water almost every day.

(MAGIRI) – The Youth Union of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) has strongly condemned a violent attack on Murle cattle traders in Magiri, in which eight people were killed, eight others wounded and over 3,000 head of cattle reportedly stolen. The statement issued on 6 August 2025 by the Chairperson of the GPAA Youth Union, Ballack P. Wilson described the raid as a brutal and unjustified act believed to have been carried out by armed youths from Jonglei State, particularly the Bor community.

Peacekeepers have increased efforts to protect civilians and deter violence by patrolling to all corners of the region and bringing feuding communities together for reconciliation and peacebuilding

(JUBA CITY) - Hon. David Yau Yau, the Deputy Minister of Information, Communication, Technology and Postal Services, visited Central Equatoria State on Tuesday to meet the newly appointed Governor, H.E. Lt. Gen. Rabi Mujung Emmanuel. The courtesy call was also an opportunity to congratulate Governor Mujung on his new role. Hon. Yau Yau, who is also a prominent political figure from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, expressed his commitment to strengthening peaceful relations between his region and Central Equatoria State.

JUBA COUNTY) – Major General Akot Lual Arech, a former special presidential envoy on Pibor affairs and one time private secretary to President Salva Kiir, was arrested in Juba last Friday, triggering public concern and political debate. His arrest, confirmed by family members and community leaders, has been linked by some to growing political tensions surrounding South Sudan’s internal security and the role of foreign troops in the country.

(JEBEL BOMA, PIBOR AREA) – One herder has been killed and another wounded following an armed cattle raid near Jebel Boma town in South Sudan’s Greater Pibor Administrative Area, local authorities confirmed on Saturday. The attack took place at around 6:00 p.m. on Friday near a cattle camp on the outskirts of the town. According to Jacob Werchum Juok, the local Information Minister, the raiders launched a sudden assault on the herders while they were tending to their animals.

(BOR) – A total of 838 Indian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been awarded UN medals for their contributions to peace and humanitarian support in the regions of Bor, Akobo and Pibor. The decorated personnel, including 12 women, were recognised for their efforts in protecting civilians, escorting humanitarian convoys and providing essential medical and veterinary services to communities across Jonglei State. The awards reflect the dedication and professionalism of Indian Blue Helmets working in some of the most challenging areas of South Sudan.

(JUBA) – South Sudan's government and its partners have marked two years since the launch of a conservation initiative that aims to protect the country’s fragile ecosystems, restore wildlife populations and support local communities. The milestone was celebrated on 28 July 2025, coinciding with World Nature Conservation Day, highlighting the early progress of a 10 year agreement between the Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism, African Parks and the European Union.
