I'm finally here, and I'm still working in palaeobotany. Here is a unpublished mummified leaf from the Neogene of Madeira Island. :)

First #FossilFriday of 2026: we begin with one of the tiniest kinds of fossils: an asterolith, a star-shaped calcareous nannofossil produced by the discoasters, a group of poorly known, extinct unicellular algae, that are however very important for the biostratigraphy of the Paleogene and Neogene.

Yeah, the neogene stuff seems to have had some thought put into it

Not bad for ending the course so close to the current geologic epoch! I still have 3 more classes, so will cover dinosaurs, Paleocene, & Neogene-Quaternary, respectively. The students seem to be enjoying the parade of Phanerozoic life, which has made it more fun for me.

You think I’m joking? I’m not joking.
STRAIGHT LINE from the vamps AND nautiloids!

Follow me for more jokes from the Neogene period of the Cenozoic era….

😃

(Disclaimer: I had to look up the era and period, I’m a genius with library and internet access, a sub-genius without)

Nadie te había explicado el tema de los #dinosaurios como nosotros.
En serio, nadie, es imposible.
Y menos mal.

Yet by the Late Jurassic, two theropod clades (Coeluridae and Elaphrosauridae) and hallopodid crocodylomorphs, were also in possession of cursorialist looking Mt/F ratios. Was something going on, equivalent to the evolution of cursorial (rather than subcursorial) grassland mammals in the Neogene?
