Oh no… I did a new thing, and it worked, and now I have IDEAS! 😂 I made my first antenna today, a simple vertical dipole for the 2m band. It’s literally a cheap broom handle, PVC, wire, and zip ties, but it works great!

Or not. I was getting wonky readings and discovered the NanoVNA I have is only good up to 1.5Ghz. Units that go into BT/Wifi frequencies cost 3x or more what I paid for mine. If I get a nicer one, will I use it enough to justify the cost? I'll have to think on it.

D'oh.

I have a new toy. It’s definitely not useful for my job - I would need a much bigger one to overcome the loss in ~300 meters of rigid transmission line - but I should probably fine-tune the Diamond NR770 antenna I’ve had on three different vehicles now.

Indeed, I have had this fun too but I find that tuning up the antenna using a nanoVNA before hooking the set up works best and is much quicker really.

Slow Work Day: Let’s sort ferrite! Made a quick ferrite material sorter using NanoVNA-H4 and a two-turn test loop. Ended up finding at least four material types. Now labeled in separate bags and ready for (easier) future use!

Moxon.

#Hamradio glitch solved (?). Problem was (?) with the pass-through connection in my window. Changed connectors and now the SWR is what it used to be.

All hail the mighty nanovna for troubleshooting this sort of thing.

Input stage pic below. Drove it with frequency generator at 22MHz but I don't have a good way of telling how well impedance matched either side is. I guess I could pick up an SWR meter for the output side and learn more about using the NanoVNA which could help with analyzing the input side?

... 🤷‍♀️

I need some more studying to understand ALL this, but I gather it's "okay" for the 2 meter band. This is a fan dipole with a second leg for the air band, which is probably going to get cut down for use on the 70 cm band instead, as my cross dipole works surprisingly well for airplanes.

I got a NanoVNA today. The stubby antennas that come with everything? They suck. Replace them first thing. https://old.reddit.com/r/meshtastic/comments/1o7wx2j/i_got_a_nanovna_today_the_stubby_antennas_that/
