#Mainframes
One end goal of "AI" is to end personal computing so big tech companies can fully be landlords once again; just like back in the era of renting time on timesharing mainframes.

Jeff Bezos said the quiet part out loud — hopes that you'll give up your PC to rent one from the cloud
Amazon's Jeff Bezos once revealed how he thinks of local PC hardware as antiquated, ready to be replaced by cloud options. Will DRAM prices make it come true?

i'm sure some 19-year-old DOGE incels jacking directly into the federal mainframes with the same personal laptop he uses to download big titty Skyrim mods was fine and produced no new vulnerabilites

The perfidy has been ongoing since IBM. My grandfather had a [recorded and archived] story about replacing vacuum tubes in the original mainframes during the first DoD tech demos.

The tech companies have always used greedy and gullible media services to sell the non-existent.

A few more sci-fi/fantasy reads that I would highly recommend to anyone and are also all quite funny and inventive.

In the IT scene of any film when they connect to an IPv4 address with an octet > 255.

I can even forgive skateboarding through mainframes or holographic 3D hacking scenes, but make an IP address accurate

run magnets through mainframes
set fires to server farms
bring the price of graphics cards back down
restore the water of the earth

enough is enough, this is the year GenAI dies

Of Monsters and Mainframes by @barbaratruelove.bsky.social is good clean fun. The core arc is the AI of the spaceship Demeter declares vengeance on Dracula for killing her passengers and things just escalate from there

It’s sweet and quite lovely and very unhuman

Okay so two of these are bc I’m reading 2 of my sister’s favourite series (the mirror visitor series and daughter of smoke/bone), and she gave me women’s hotel. I’ve been listening to of monsters and mainframes and LOVE it, eiren caffall wrote a memoir i loved, and the 6th extinction is beautiful

My (previously undisclosed) resolution for 2025 was to get back into reading. I was having trouble figuring out what to read so set up StoryGraph for collecting recommendations and made liberal use of borrowing from Libby! 23 books read, only one reread (Lamb)

an M3 Mac Studio with 256GB of memory on sale! instead of $6,000 - it’s $5,400!

we’re going back to mainframes and thin clients, baby! no more “personal” computers!
[Newsis] Consumer GPUs to increase in price next year. RTX 5090 to increase from $2000 to $5000

Finally, a western media round up! As always, these didn't necessarily come out in 2025 - 2025 is just when I read them. I'm better at keeping up to date with Manga releases than other types. I intended to have a "Best TV" one but it turns out that I didn't actually watch a lot of TV this year?

Canadian Medicare was established at a time when mainframes took up whole buldings but okay
My issue is that everyone wants legislation and assumes it will just all work. It won’t. Too many vested interests. Too much need for AI to make it all work, which will scare people and make them question it more.

If you have a written path to get from here to them. Just email it to me
