#MacPorts
My problem is Macports is configurable but doesn’t let you stay on the cutting edge and has fallen behind in package availability, where Brew is “babies first package manager” but gets all the goodies and also forces you to live on the bleeding edge at all times

How does it compare to Macports and Brew in terms of available packages and stability?

Alternatives like MacPorts, Nix, and Conda are gaining attention. Users are exploring these options for greater control, especially for managing unsigned or unnotarized binaries, seeking tools more aligned with their 'pro-user' needs. #DevTools 5/6

I maintain most of the JDK ports in MacPorts (ports.macports.org/search/?q=op...) and if you use any of those, you'll automatically get the latest updates whenever you update your ports.

(You do use a package manager, right? And you do also actually use it to keep your software up-to-date, right?)

@timbray It's a protected DNS service. It attempts to block malicious servers at the DNS level. Fast, unobtrusive, and generally works great.

Except it keeps flagging macports servers as malware, and they won't tell me why (maybe I should email, they probably don't check notifications on @cira )

URGH. Had to install quickjs from MacPorts. Just lost 5 hours of effort and 5 years of my life from this stress.

How the hell do I specify it fetching a specific build binary for a specific OS in MacPorts? I tried `port install deno` but it just fetched the latest version. I cannot install Xcode or anything related to it.

macOS Venturaにqemuを入れたい場合brewじゃ無くてmacportsを使えば行けます(2025/10/30時点)

A small annoyance for any #macports users who have local port sources (e.g. something you added to ${prefix}/etc/macports/sources.conf):

MacPorts 2.11.6 is stricter about permissions such that if your custom source is under your home directory then `port` will have permissions errors when doing […]

Speaking of it being 2025... when can we have updated command line utilities as part of the native install please Apple?? Why do I need homebrew / macports so I can have the '-u' option in my 'cp' utility?

C'mon... sort it out. Everyone knows you're sitting on a pile of cash bigger than the […]

i really appreciate the difference between homebrew and macports
homebrew just says to Not if you're on an OS older than 10.14, macports goes "here's an installer for 10.6" with official support and patches to make it work
god bless

Homebrew broke down because I'm using the OpenCore Patcher. Fine, I'll use MacPorts that work fine. Not gonna replace my fine running 2014 mac because the manufacturer decided to stop supporting it. I hear the GNU/Linux runs fine on it too! #brew #macports #macos

Mac prebuilts can be found on Homebrew or Macports, and I think @spackpm.bsky.social has some public mirrors for a variety of common packages across multiple platforms.

Yes, this is the branch of GCC that ships in all macOS distros (Homebrew, macports, pypi, conda, julia, etc). It follows the ABI of macOS, so it is compatible with clang. Currently you can optimize for M3 but not M4, although I don't expect much of a difference.

There is a working darwin tree of GCC, maintained by the official GCC maintainer for Darwin, and it is what Homebrew, MacPorts, Python (Pypi and conda), Julia ecosystems all use for example to interface with Fortran code. But I guess you know that, so I'll stop the discussion here :)

Huh, so no more golang for old Mac OS versions… Dang, now I have to figure out how to pin packages in # macports . Hope that doesn't involve "overlays"…
